How can we ensure reproductive rights remain an urgent global priority amid today’s contested political landscape? As global leaders gather for this year's UN General Assembly, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are more critical than ever. In my latest piece for The Brookings Institution, I reflect on three decades of progress since the UN’s landmark International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), the contentious politics of SRHR, and challenges that lie ahead. In the lead-up to September high season at the United Nations, many people ask me how the world is doing on the Sustainable Development Goals. Over the coming days I'll share some charts from a recent paper that Homi Kharas, Odera Onyechi and I published to unpack the issues from a few key angles. A first and simplest question: how does the world look compared to 2015? We estimate things are better on most indicators with adequate data to assess, even if none are currently on track for their 2030 targets. However, on a handful of issues—including food insecurity, nutrition, malaria, road deaths, and emissions indicators—things look worse. https://lnkd.in/eP7VPbSK #sdg The Brookings Institution
