About us

The Canton Railroad Company (Canton RR) is a 100% stock owned by the Maryland Transporation Authority, a Maryland Department of Transportation business unit. The Canton RR was chartered in 1906 and is the preeminent short line in Maryland and is a Class III short-line switching carrier based in Baltimore, Maryland. The railroad owns approximately 17 miles of track, most of which are located within the City of Baltimore, with one mile of track stretching into Baltimore County. As well as six switching locomotives, several rail cars, operating equipment, and has an office building that supports its Baltimore operations. Canton RR provides freight service to 30 industries in the area—transporting products ranging from canned goods to fuel oil—through delivery to/from both CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern railroads. It is important to note that the Canton RR owns the rail access to the Seagirt Marine Terminal at the Port of Baltimore. The Canton RR is nationally recognized for its safety record and has received numerous industry awards over the last five years, including an eight-year history of no lost time employee injuries. The Canton Railroad Company is an eight-time ASLRRA Safety Award Recipient.

    The Canton RR (CTN) owns a petroleum transload facility currently leased and operated by Apex Oil, a wholesale distributor of petroleum products (www.apexoil.com), at 1622 South Clinton Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21224 Features of the facility are: ·       Daily (Mon. – Fri.) service from Canton Railroad (CTN), which interchanges with both CSXT and NS ·       Fenced ·       Lighted ·       Four tracks – 20 car spots o   Eight spots for butane, biodiesel, asphalt, ethanol, fuel additives, etc. o  Twelve spots for black or ‘heavy’ oil (with heating equipment to facilitate unloading) – paved access ·       Close to interstates (1/4 mile to I-895 south, ½ mile to I-95 north) ·       Accessible to the adjacent tank farm and barge terminal via pipe ·       A direct tie to Colonial Pipeline ·       Adjacent tank farm (20 tanks with varying capacity, insulated and heated, with mixers and internal floating roof ·       Direct access to port facilities via pipeline (1/2 mile away) ·       Five-bay truck loading rack Here's a map of the facility.
