"Otsuka has quantified the financial impact of caregivers, calculating that people in the U.S. who look after loved ones with dementia would earn $114,000 on average if paid for the daily care they provide... Late last year, Otsuka published results from a survey that found almost half of people looking after a loved one with dementia feel like they’re drowning and unprepared for the role. For its latest project, Otsuka worked with Salary.com to understand the personal financial implications of looking after a loved one with dementia. Caregivers are a huge block of people. According to recent Pew Research, nearly a quarter of all adult Americans are sandwich generation caregivers. This only surprises people who don’t belong to this category. We find it refreshing that someone has finally noticed. This is not an endorsement. This is not a political statement. 🥳 We wish Former President Jimmy Carter a very happy 100th birthday! As CNN reports, this milestone brings to focus the longevity many people are now experiencing. The challenge, of course, is that most folks aren't former presidents with access to the care and planning that accompanies it. "But the population of 100-year-olds is expected to quadruple in the coming decades, according to Pew Research Center. It estimated in January that the current number of centenarians was around 101,000 and that the figure would increase to about 422,000 within 30 years, a small but growing portion of the US population as the average age increases and the birth rate declines. CNN’s Eva Rothenberg wrote a year ago about the challenges many Americans will face later in life as they live longer, with more than half of older Americans likely needing long-term care in the future – something that many will not be able to afford and that is not covered under Medicare, the federal health insurance program that primarily benefits older Americans."
