Putting research into practice & bridging service gaps through mentorship
About us
The Center for Evidence-Based Mentoring was founded in 2012 through a generous gift from MENTOR: National Mentoring Partnership. Our mission is to drive evidence-based innovation that advances mentoring practice and helps to bridge gaps in mental health care among young people, particularly in marginalized communities. Our team of clinical and community psychologists, postdocs, doctoral students, and undergraduates generate, test, and apply scientific knowledge in collaboration with a broad network of mentoring programs, practitioners, and scholars. We accept graduate students through the APA-accredited clinical psychology program at UMass Boston. We are a grant-supported, research-oriented lab so are particularly interested in mentoring graduate students who are obsessed with research!

Profiles in cultural humility: Examining differences in openness to training and match length among volunteer mentors. Implications for Mentoring Programs: 💡 Integration of Cultural Humility Training: Programs will want to consider developing and implementing training programs focused on enhancing cultural humility among mentors, particularly those with lower initial awareness. 💡 Ongoing Support and Monitoring: Provide continuous support and monitoring to ensure that mentors maintain and develop cultural humility over time, potentially reducing early match terminations. https://lnkd.in/eDsvd2wE

New Review Highlights the Importance of Nonverbal Signals for Perceived Responsiveness Carmichael and Mizrahi (2023) review the literature on the impact of nonverbal behaviors on conveying responsiveness in interpersonal relationships. Responsiveness, defined as the ability to listen and respond supportively, is critical in establishing and maintaining satisfying relationships. This study emphasizes the importance of nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, vocal tone, touch, and body language in communicating understanding, validation, and care. https://lnkd.in/eqjamN9Z

Positive Youth Development (PYD) programs focus on promoting youths’ strengths through supportive relational contexts. However, the specific impacts of these programs on youth from low-income households, who face significant structural and systemic inequities, remain underexplored. Boat and colleagues (2024) examine the bidirectional pathways between relationships with peers and program staff and youths’ sense of belonging. https://lnkd.in/emF8T7ut

✨ Please join us in welcoming our newest graduate student: Aish! ✨ Aish is an incoming doctoral student in clinical psychology at UMass Boston. They earned their bachelor’s degree in neurobiology from Harvard in 2020. After college, Aish worked as a research coordinator in infectious disease and HIV prevention research. Subsequently, they served as a research assistant on teams investigating transdiagnostic sleep interventions and prison #mentalhealth. Aish is enthusiastic about joining the CEBM team to explore mechanisms of effective paraprofessional support. They are particularly interested in examining training infrastructures and how #paraprofessionals can best support individuals receiving mental health interventions. Additionally, Aish is interested in studying the impact of #mentoring designed to promote social connection and #upwardmobility.
