  • The healing qualities of “farm life," day by day, year by year, being surrounded by animals, nature and the cycle of life…..are medicine for the soul! They invade one’s being in ways that are indescribable. This is exactly why were are offering this unique program at the Smith Farmstead, which will be centered on the healing qualities of nature. This program is for a small group of no more than 12 adults who have experienced a significant loss. While anyone that fits that description may register, we do recognize that this specific program may not be best suited for those whose loss is very recent. Unlike therapy or discussion-centered support groups, each week will offer a different activity or modality to explore which may awaken inward personal reflections and expressions of grief while also providing opportunities for connection to others. Join as Center facilitators share expressive coping outlets which can be incorporated into everyday life. The cost for all three weeks is $45; preregistration is required. Call 610-222-4110 to register or you may complete a registration form here: The healing qualities of “farm life," day by day, year by year, being surrounded by animals, nature and the cycle of life…..are medicine for the soul! • We are excited to announce a new group in partnership with the Adalyn Rose Foundation! The Adalyn Rose Foundation serves families grieving the loss of a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth, or during infancy. They walk with families through every step of life after baby loss, from the first moments and all those that follow. Through this partnership, those who have experienced the loss of an infant (after hospital discharge) or young child (through age five) can be referred through ARF to join an upcoming support group facilitated by staff at The Center. This group will be held virtually on Wednesday evenings, from 6:30pm-8:00pm beginning on September 4th. Interested? You reach out to the Adalyn Rose Foundation at info@adalynrosefoundation.com!

  • Last month, our Center was invited to speak during a Lunch-and-Learn hosted by Jillian Gallagher, of the Southeastern PA Department of Environmental Protection. Jill is one of the Center’s treasured volunteers, giving her time to help in our fundraising events and in our children's support group programs, Nello's Corner and Camp Millie. Jill's awareness of grief's impact and of the benefits offered in our support services had been enhanced through her special role with the Center, and she wanted to share that awareness with others in her team at the DEP. Through this presentation, Jill and her colleagues provided a warm welcome to Emily Vincent, Executive Director of the Center, and collected roughly $150 in donations along with an assortment of books for our library (pictured with Ashley Herr, our Education and Outreach Director)! We are so grateful for the opportunity to get to meet your team, Jillian Gallagher, and appreciate your commitment to strengthening awareness of grief support in your company! Thank you to the generous folks at the DEP for your support of our mission, and for your openness to this important and sensitive topic of conversation. If you are interested in bringing this topic to your company for a lunch-and-learn or a more in-depth training, please reach out to us! In addition to our counseling and group direct services, we know that a resilient community depends on the understanding and responsive presence of others in all areas of life. We provide education, consultation, and responsive support for businesses and organizations interested in deepening awareness of grief as it presents in the workplace. +3

  • Music is powerful. Both creators and consumers often use it as a tool for processing both times of hardship and times of joy. Music can be an especially important companion in the grieving process. In a study titled "Exploring the Role of Music in Grief," music therapists Lauren Patrick DiMaio and Alexa Economos interviewed 141 adults grieving the death of a close family member or friend. Once the interviews were completed, the answers were analyzed in order to identify themes in responses. Three themes were that music helped participants to: confront the pain, adapt to the loss, and to continue bonds with the deceased. Other findings from the data were that: 68% of participants reported that they found comfort in listening to music, that 70% felt that music helped with finding meaning and beauty life after the loss, and that 65% thought listening to music was a cathartic experience. Does music play a role in your grief? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section!
