About us

The Chocolate Factory Theater is an artist-centered organization built by and for artists. Co-founders Sheila Lewandowski and Brian Rogers began making work together in 1995 and quickly saw the need for a creative home to support their work and the work of fellow experimental performance-based artists. The Chocolate Factory, therefore, has grown and developed within and through a creative process that centers the development of new work, as guided by makers.

  • To close out the year incredibly strongly, we share the last poster post with the one and only Jess Pretty! In call and response, jess pretty wraps her audience in a conceptual, and literal, embrace. Unfolding as a dance-based, experiential conversation – between pretty and her younger selves, her ancestors, and everybody else in the room – call and response is a kind of casual, yet devotional, soirèe or salon or kickback, with pretty as the host. Within an environment of familiar (and familial) comforts – living room furniture, record player, books, and plants; all of it bathed in continuous, deep blue light – call and response doles out laughter and music as soft (and generous) launching points for an experience of memory and reflection that is shared and felt as much as it is witnessed. It endeavors to slow down the room; and invites us to join in the attempt. Choreographer / Performer: jess pretty. Creative Interlocutors: keyon gaskin & Niall Jones. Lighting Design / Tech Support / Set Design: Maggie Heath. DJ / Sound Practitioner: Tyler Hughley / DJ Luccihugh. Sound Consultant: Jeremy Touissaint-Baptiste. #chocolatefactorytheater #posterpost #endofyear #arts #theater #lic #queens

  • Get inspired to donate to our end-of-year campaign to raise $25,000 with Board Member Neil Greenberg's story about why he loves the Chocolate Factory Theater!!! "I’ve experienced first-hand just how SPECIAL it is to make work within the ARTIST-CENTERED environment and ethos of The Chocolate Factory Theater. Artists are literally given keys to the space. That level of TRUST IN ARTISTS also applies to the work we make, which allows for meaningful risk-taking as each artist thinks through just what it might mean to put a work onstage.** Have you been to The Chocolate Factory Theater’s HUGE new space yet? That was purchased for us by the city? That will be even more of a resource for artists, audiences, and the broader community once renovated? I’ve seen the plans. The renovated permanent facility will be a fully accessible, LEED certified theater, with seating capacity for over 150 audience members; and will allow for CF to expand programming and engagement by providing artists and community members with access to a 2,500 SQ/FT WALL-TO-WALL SPRUNG FLOOR STAGE (!!!), dressing rooms, lobby, and a dedicated community room." To support our work, and artists much like Neil Greenberg please make a donation today: https://lnkd.in/ed2CfbRe #fundraiser #cft #thechocoaltefactorytheater #endofyearcampaign #25000 #money #arts

  • Though many (notably with economic privilege) romanticize moving to NYC to live out their dreams, it's not easy to sustain a life here. Let’s just say, it takes a lot of - not giving up - over and over again to see a bigger and better tomorrow in this city. CF currently finds itself at a unique and critical juncture. Within the past 10 years, we have invested in slow growth including (1) the breadth and scope of our artistic programs (2) the size and makeup of our staff and board, (3) the acquisition of our new permanent facility (which has more than tripled our footprint, but requires significantly more labor to operate) (4) the continued search for new funding opportunities with our increased budget while public funding continues to decrease; private funders are making shifts in priorities away from the Arts and Culture; and some are sadly sunsetting. I often find myself questioning if it was smart, to risk growing this incubator and artistic home during these trying times, and the answer is and will always be YES. As I watch a large number of peer organizations close their doors, I become more certain that we CANNOT STOP supporting the work that makes this City magical. Though it’s taking a lot of - not giving up - we remain committed to building a home for groundbreaking performances outside of Manhattan and grounded in our mission of supporting artists in their process of risk-taking. Personally, through my work at CFT, I’m learning that I moved to this City to contribute to the - not giving up - on Arts and Culture, to advocate for what makes NYC vibrant and inspirational. It’s inevitable and a key ingredient to revolution. And THE time to take those risks is now or never if we hope to create a bigger and better tomorrow across the globe. I’m deeply grateful and fortunate to be a part of an organization that will always be a part of THAT revolution. I am certain that with a donation of any size that is available to you****, this hope will manifest. https://ow.ly/AjBt50SmVsH

  • Having just closed out their performances last week, we celebrate the phenomenal performances of Angie Pittman and their piece "Black Life Chord Changes." This new evening-length solo performance (broken into scores for “day” and “night”) used dance improvisation – skilfully pulling from, and synthesizing folk traditions of liturgical dancing, Soul line dancing, Umfundalai, and post-modern improvisation – with layers of sung and spoken text, patient listening, and recorded sound, to open an experimental improvised movement portal. Blackly so. Through these visceral Black womanist traditions, Black Life Chord Changes slips in and out of deep listening, seeing, improvisation, and truth-telling. Choreographer/Performer: Angie Pittman. Composer: Cody Jensen. Lighting Designer: Tuce Yasak. Recording Artists: Tiffany Williams, Carla E. Jones, Aaron (A+) Wilson. Arrangement: Ther’Up.Y. Lyricist: Angie Pittman. Cape: Vincent Tiley. Words: Angie Pittman with contributions from A Sef. Dramaturgical Support: Iris McCloughan. Production: Shana Crawford. #lic #longislandcity #queens #theater #dance #performance #chocolatefactorythearter #cft
