Athletic Trainers at colleges and universities have historically been underpaid and over-worked. The burnout rate for professionals in this setting is at an all-time high. There needs to be a change.

This article includes quotes from panelists Dr. Bill Roberts, chief medical officer at ACSM, and Brant Berkstresser, MS, LAT, ATC, chair at Intercollegiate Council for Sports Medicine. “There are just so many more opportunities for an athletic trainer from an employment setting,” said Berkstresser. “And so when we look at these settings, such as industrial, military, physician offices, things like that, they have really increased employment opportunities for us as ATs. Why is 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 so important? Stress is a normal physiological and psychological response to the demands placed on an athlete through sports and life. Being able to manage that stress is both necessary and advantageous to elite athletes as it has proven to: 1. Help maintain physical and mental health 2. Prove cognitive function 3. Foster healthy relationships 4. Prevent burnout 5. Enhance quality of life (Wenger, 2023) Everyone goes through periods of time when stress is high and having a strategy in place to help manage that stress will prove beneficial to both improving performance and reducing injury risk.
