About us

The Community Foundation is a leading partner and advocate for philanthropy and service in the Richmond region. Founded in 1968, we have built a strong legacy of helping people and institutions give back with passion and purpose. Together, we have strengthened local nonprofit organizations and enhanced lives throughout our community. By working side by side with a powerful and growing network of changemakers, the Foundation has become the largest community foundation in Virginia and the third largest in the Southeast. Today, we manage more than 1,000 charitable funds with assets totaling $876 million. This includes six supporting foundations that have chosen to fulfill their charitable legacy in partnership with us, as well as three regional affiliates that were established to address the needs and interests of the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck. Since our inception, we have collectively granted $1 billion to thousands of nonprofits working in all areas of community life.

  • The federal government defines affordable childcare as costing no more than 7% of a household’s income. Yet families, on average, spend 27% of their income on childcare. With very few government subsidies and an overall limit to affordable slots available, caregivers are often forced to make compromises in their own careers or in the quality of childcare they receive. While the current childcare system is in crisis, there is hope on the horizon. More people are aware of the issue and research is underway to accurately understand current limitations and possible solutions. Join us for an in-depth exploration of what it takes to create a healthy system of early childcare and a thriving workforce, where local experts will discuss the challenges, highlight successful interventions, and share ways you can get involved to drive meaningful change. Each of these incredible organizations is dedicated to improving the well-being of our community in unique ways: Birth In Color is a birth, policy, and advocacy nonprofit focused on raising awareness surrounding maternal health and reproductive justice. The organization provides services for birthing people of color and aim to change the narrative of maternal health. Sportable - Adaptive Sports and Recreation creates opportunities by making sports accessible and inclusive for individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments. Sylvia's Sisters aims to end period poverty by providing quality period products to menstruators, both locally and abroad, so they can thrive at home, school, and work.   • The Community Foundation is excited to announce the finalists of this years R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence. Congratulations to all of the nominees and finalists! 📚 🎒

 Established in 1988, the R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence recognizes public school teachers who distinguish themselves by their inspiring classroom performance. The program is based on the belief that a positive educational experience at the elementary, middle and high school levels helps children form positive life-long habits toward learning and discipline. Through a nomination process, approximately 15 outstanding teachers are selected each year to receive cash grants to support professional development activities. Award recipients have earned graduate degrees, climbed mountains, traced their ancestors and met peers from around the world - all to reignite their own passion for learning and to pass it on to their students. 🌟 Learn More: https://lnkd.in/eqQq-dpN

  • The rain didn’t stop our team from having a lovely time visiting Community Impact Grant recipients this week! Our first stop was a tour of St. Joseph’s Villa. St. Joseph's Villa is a non-sectarian nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children and youth reach their potential. The organization creates brighter futures for children of all socioeconomic backgrounds faced with developmental disabilities, diverse learning styles, mental health issues, homelessness and other challenges. It was a pleasure to tour the facilities, including the newly renovated gym, community garden, and auditorium, and hear from the staff about the organization's services and expanding initiatives.
