In honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day, we want to take a minute to highlight Indigenous-led organizations that The Conservation Alliance is proud to be supporting through grants. Each one of these groups is actively working to protect outdoor spaces while centering the authority and honor of Native communities and cultures. The dena kayeh institute is working to protect the Dene K’éh Kusān landscape which consists of more than 40,000 square kilometers which are home to more than 18,000 cultural sites. The Native American Rights Fund (NARF) has played a fundamental role in protecting the 28 million acres of D-1 lands in Alaska. The Northern Chumash Tribal Council is developing the first tribally led scientific marine sanctuary collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). People of Red Mountain (Atsa Koodakuh wyh Nuwu) are actively advocating for the protection of sacred and environmentally sensitive landscapes in the McDermitt Caldera region spanning Nevada and Oregon. Largely thanks to Ridges to Riffles Indigenous Conservation Group, three dams have now been removed from the Klamath River, opening up fish passage to more than 400 miles of potential habitat. The TEXAS TRIBAL BUFFALO PROJECT currently stewards and is working to expand protections on 77 acres of land with a growing cultural herd of 22 bison. In Wyoming, the Wind River Tribal Buffalo Initiative is working to acquire and maintain fee lands and to enact land use changes on Tribal land for buffalo conservation which would ensure buffalo are protected as wildlife under Tribal law. This week, TCA members, grantees, partners, and other community members gathered in Winters, CA to celebrate the expansion of Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument to include Molok Luyuk, a landscape that is sacred to the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation. We're proud to have supported this effort through our #MobilizingforMonuments campaign via sign on letters, petitions, and other communications. Congratulations to TCA grantee, Tuleyome, for their hard work on this monumental victory. The Conservation Alliance is proud to highlight individuals at member companies who are doing exceptional work to advance TCA priority campaigns and grantmaking efforts. This time, we are excited to recognize Abigail Cook, the Brand Marketing and ESG Manager at Oboz Footwear. Recently, Abigail led efforts for Oboz (headquartered in Montana) to offer local support to FRIENDS OF MISSOULA PARKS INC, a TCA grantee, in their protection and reopening of Marshall Mountain. Their team brought a demo fleet of hiking footwear for participants to try, handed out some swag items, and enjoyed conversations about the Mountain, community, and expansion of recreational opportunities in East Missoula. On top of that, Abigail has joined The Conservation Alliance at member fly-ins in Washington DC and the TCA Summit in 2023, which she says further solidified her commitment and passion to protect North America’s invaluable places and landscapes. She says she knows "collective action and change is possible when people who care deeply about something come together" and we couldn't agree more. You're awesome, Abigail!

A total of $410,000 is being awarded to 12 organizations across North America working to protect outdoor spaces and wild places, the last four of which are named below. The Conservation Alliance is proud to have given: 🌱 $35,000 to Methow Valley Citizens Council (Great NW Forests Campaign) 🌱 $35,000 to the TEXAS TRIBAL BUFFALO PROJECT (Homecoming: Land Rematriation and Buffalo Restoration in Texas) 🌱 $30,000 to the Trust for Public Land (Hazen’s Notch: Protecting Recreation and Wilderness in Vermont’s Green Mountains) 🌱 $25,000 to Tuleyome (Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument Management Plan) Please help us congratulate this cycle’s round of grantees and extend thanks to the 588 employees from 83 member companies who helped make this happen! We are thrilled to highlight three recent conservation projects that have recently crossed the finish line! Our collective voice is creating real, positive change for our planet’s wild places and outdoor spaces. We're celebrating: 🏆 Three dams removed from the Klamath River, with much credit to our grantees California Trout and Ridges to Riffles Indigenous Conservation Group. 🏆 The protections of 480 acres through the establishment of Marshall Mountain Park, thanks to FRIENDS OF MISSOULA PARKS INC. 🏆 A total of 385 river miles in Colorado protected because of the work of American Rivers.
