Celebrations are in order in Northern California as we and partners conserve 247 acres at Beach Ranch!🎉 Here we’re ensuring the restoration of wetlands and building climate change resilience, benefiting the area’s estuarine wetlands, agricultural infrastructure, and organic fruit and vegetable production. The nature-based solutions for climate change deployed at Beach Ranch will also help protect the surrounding communities that are at high risk for catastrophic flooding. We've helped fill a critical 320-acre gap within the Apalachicola National Forest in Florida late last week as we transferred the acreage to the USDA Forest Service, achieving a priority addition for the national forest. Located within one of the most ecologically diverse areas in North America, the property is home to rare and imperiled species, including the federally threatened gopher tortoise and federally endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. It also includes a portion of Fort Gadsen Creek, a tributary to the Apalachicola River. With this acquisition, the entire creek is now in public ownership. Public funding was provided through the Land and Water Conservation Fund (#LWCF), and private support was provided by the EJK Foundation and Vaughan Hedrick. Special thanks to our funding partners and National Forests in Florida as well as Florida’s U.S. Congressional delegation — thanks Senator Rick Scott, Senator Marco Rubio and Congressman Neal Dunn. 📷 TCF

Approximately one year after we worked with partners to permanently protect “the view that named Richmond” along the historic Virginia riverfront, the James A. Buzzard River Education Center on the property officially opened! The Center will serve as an environmental education hub for children and provides improved river access to the Richmond community around it. Check out what else is in store for the Center and how it’s already become a large part of Richmond children’s summer: bit.ly/46HQnx0. City of Richmond, Virginia, Capital Region Land Conservancy

Celebrate with us a “forest trifecta” of conservation in Colorado today as we add 130 acres of previously private lands to the Pike-San Isabel National Forest! Just two hours southwest of Denver, this scenic mountain meadow property with gorgeous views of the state’s famed “fourteener” Pikes Peak will: 👣 increase — and lock in perpetuity🔒 — public recreational access for hunting, hiking and much more; 🦌 protect important habitat for elk, mule deer and wild turkey; and 🔥provide strategic wildfire prevention grounds for the USDA Forest Service. A special thank you to U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper and U.S. Rep Brittany Pettersen for securing #LWCF funding. Last week, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) honored Ray Herndon, our vice president of the Lower Mississippi & Gulf Coast, with the 2023 National Land Protection Award for his commendable work completing a multi-year acquisition of more than 8,300 acres at Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas. Ray worked for eight years with state and federal conservation partners to navigate an increasingly complex and high-stakes conservation process. Through numerous challenges, Ray and the team remained committed to the goal at hand — more public outdoor recreational opportunities for hunting and fishing and the protection of these iconic bottomland hardwood forests that will also help enhance water quality and wildlife habitat for wintering waterfowl. Congratulations and well-deserved, Ray! Learn more about this work, here: lnkd.in/eSZsVgU4. #LWCF

Little River Canyon National Preserve in Alabama — which we helped establish many years ago — has been saved from falling to real estate development by none other than tourism and a tiny gift shop! Check out how: bit.ly/4dx9OKU.

Incredibly honored that our own Phillip Howard — and his work within our Civil Rights People and Places program — has been named Preservation Action's Hero of the Quarter! Thank you, Preservation Action, for recognizing this important work.
There are many remarkable people on the front lines of preservation advocacy. Each quarter, Preservation Action recognizes a preservation advocate who has made an impact and is an inspiration. They are our Preservation Action Heroes. Our Q3 2024 "Hero of the Quarter" is Phillip Howard of Alabama. Phillip Howard serves as project manager of the Civil Rights People and Places program at The Conservation Fund. His efforts to preserve the stories and sites associated with the struggle for Civil Rights in Alabama and Mississippi are raising awareness and contributing to our understanding of this pivotal time in American history. Thank you, Phillip, for embodying what it means to be a Preservation Action Hero! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dMad-Bd3
