Bring your whole self to work. Motto or real company practice? One day while I was reflecting, I couldn’t recall ever sharing my external creative projects or song performances with colleagues during my 5-year corporate journey because thought creative me should stay totally separate of corporate of me. In hindsight, I realize I'd either adapted to an unspoken corporate culture or had subconsciously decided to protect this part of me to have some sort of safe haven? It could have been a mixture of both, but I think what matters more is what "bring your whole self to work" can look like in the future. For Corporate Creatives, there are so many possibilities including: -having a micro community at work to support one another's creative projects and help build creative portfolios -taking a short workweek during slow season to focus on generating supplemental creative revenue -hiring internal Corporate Creatives to perform at the annual Christmas gala, host relevant trainings, or cross-train in a more creative role within the firm, spending a few hours/week with the video production or marketing team -answering that no-longer dreaded question of "What did you do this weekend?' with "I just auditioned for a local musical and I'm really excited to hear back." instead of "Oh nothing, just got some rest, read a few books and caught up on some work." I’m proud to say I spend every moment theorizing about how best to connect with, utilize and empower the Corporate Creative segment of your employee base.
