  • “Hollywood has distorted our notions of romance and what makes passion sizzle. Watching Humphrey Bogart gather teary-eyed Ingrid Bergman into his arms may make your heart pound, but real life romance is fueled by far more humdrum scenes. It is kept alive each time you let your spouse know he or she is valued during the grind of everyday life.”—John M. Gottman After years of studying couples in the lab and working with them directly, it has become clear to Gottman that happy couples live by the credo “When you are in pain, the world stops and I listen.” Try this: 1. Acknowledge the difficulty.
 2. Self-soothe.
 3. Remember: the goal is understanding.
 4. Use explanatory statements and open-ended questions.
 5. Don’t ask “Why?”
 6. Bear witness.
 7. Use your partner’s metaphors.

  • “Many people think that the secret to reconnecting with their partner is a vacation by the sea. But a romantic outing only turns up the heat if the couple has kept the pilot light burning by staying in touch in the little ways.”—John M. Gottman Try this exercise: The Stress-reducing conversation 1. Take turns.
 2. Show genuine interest.
 3. Don’t give unsolicited advice.
 4. Communicate your understanding.
 5. Take your partner’s side.
 6. Express a “we against others” attitude.
 7. Show affection.
