The Daily Journal in Kankakee is searching for a Life Editor to join the team. In addition to overseeing the newspaper's Life section and working as editor of Lifestyles of Kankakee County (the Journal's quarterly magazine), this role is also heavily involved in the day-to-day production of the newspaper. This position is full-time and hybrid (in the downtown Kankakee-based office Monday through Wednesday and then working remotely Thursday and Friday). Requirements include: Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field. At least one year of experience in news editing and news writing. Possession of strong news judgment. Responsibilities include: Overseeing the Life section of the Daily Journal. Overseeing production of Lifestyles of Kankakee County (four times per year). Assisting in overseeing the newspaper production. Copy edit stories from other reporters/wire. Write feature articles and news briefs (this includes conducting interviews and working on deadlines). The qualifications and skills required are: • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, media or any related field preferred • Previous work experience in journalism or a related field preferred • A working understanding of Microsoft and Google programs pertaining to email and document sharing • An understanding of social media engagement, both as an individual reporter and as a representative of the Daily Journal • Proficiency in AP style and a firm grasp on grammar and punctuation • Excellent written and oral skills, both in interviews and any potential audio or video work • Integrity, reliability, accuracy and fairness • The ability to work on deadlines, including working with page designers • A valid driver’s license and vehicle are required The Daily Journal is located in Kankakee, Illinois, roughly a one-hour drive south of Chicago, and proudly covers all of Kankakee and Iroquois Counties, as well as portions of Will and Grundy Counties.
