At DAWN, we do not see the problems caused by #dementia as dementia-related behaviors, but instead expressions of emotional distress as they undergo progressive cognitive impairment. Behaviors express human need, not disease. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

We teach families & care providers how to support the skills not lost in dementia while preserving dignity and autonomy.
About us
The DAWN Method believes in preserving dignity and autonomy through aging in place. We do this by training families and caregivers in meeting the emotional needs and rational thought losses caused by dementia. The DAWN Method is a set of tools for caring for people with dementia. The DAWN Method seeks to help individuals with dementia live full and happy lives, and help their families experience less stress. The DAWN Method helps people with dementia develop a sense of security and wellbeing and lessens the distress caused by experiencing dementia. The DAWN mission is to help families and dementia caregivers provide better care so they experience less stress and can put off the expense of long-term care. We offer online dementia care training for families and their caregivers as well as dementia certification for agencies, care facilities, and professional dementia care specialists.

Touch, even if it’s brief, can deliver positive or negative messages just as surely and powerfully as eye contact. As someone loses memory and rational thought, receiving expressions of acceptance and reassurance in sensory ways becomes ever more important. #dementia #Alzheimers

"When I have the privilege of giving even glimpses of the DAWN Method to a family, it's as if they get to take a deep breath for the first time in a really long time." -Jill Couch, MS, OT/L Learn more about the DAWN HomeCare dementia course for families: https://buff.ly/3bFwtaa #dementia #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

#Dementia is not hopeless. It brings losses, but within those losses are gifts—when we learn how to support the person's strengths and enjoy the intuitive world with them. You will both find joy in beauty. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #Alzheimers

"...As we worked our way through the course together, [the DAWN DementiaCoach Class material] built upon itself and became dense with practical applications, full of layers of things to consider, ways to deal with the ongoing challenges I am facing... These are just a few of the 'gems' I was given by [my DAWN Trainer/coach] and this course." — Dorsey, family caregiver https://buff.ly/3Nn4z67

When we respect someone's personal reality when they're experiencing #dementia, we help them retain a sense of safety and wellbeing. We'll both experience less stress, more companionship, and fewer negative interactions. This is strength-based care. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3

When you suspect that someone is experiencing #dementia, or hear the diagnosis, it can be overwhelming. Though you may grieve the loss of how things were before, not all is lost. Caring for someone with dementia at home is very possible. https://buff.ly/3NX8171 #dementiacare #dementiatips

We cannot expect someone with #dementia to grasp that their reality differs from ours without rational thinking skills, or to accurately interpret the present without memory. Our job as care partners is to help them stay safe and happy despite confusion. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3
