About us

The Economic Development Association for Black Communities is on a mission to develop political leaders, Black business, and Black talent in Denver. Despite broadly-termed, minority-focused government aid programs, political representation, and an ideologically aligned Democratic Colorado Black Caucus, Black poverty has decreased by only 13 percentage points since 1969, about 1% every 3.5 years and 95% of Black and Brown third graders at Denver Public Schools could not read at grade level in 2021. In two-thirds of Colorado school districts, less than 14% of Black students meet or exceed grade level benchmarks in mathematics even with it being accepted that tech, math, and reading skills are crucially important for accessing today’s living-wage jobs. The answers for us do not rely upon political affiliation, representation, or welfare, but on job readiness, political education, business leadership, strong family units, and a sense of personal power that increases Black participation in the economy. A renewed approach to Black economic development is required. We are here to provide it.

  • Colorado's space industry is soaring! Recently, the 39th Space Symposium brought together 12,000 people from around the world in Colorado Springs, showcasing the state's pivotal role in aerospace and defense. Major players like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Ball Aerospace all call Colorado home. This booming industry boasts the second-largest aerospace economy in the US, according to the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. But as we celebrate this success, a critical question remains: is Colorado's Black community included in this exciting journey? Historically, the space industry hasn't always reflected the rich diversity of our population. Colorado has a thriving Black community with immense potential to contribute to this innovative field. The question is, how do we ensure Black students, professionals, and entrepreneurs have the access, training, and mentorship they need to thrive in the space industry? Here are some ideas to get the conversation started: Invest in STEM education programs specifically designed to engage and empower Black youth in Colorado. Create internship and mentorship opportunities that connect Black students and professionals with leading companies in the state. Develop targeted outreach programs to raise awareness about space industry careers within Black communities. By fostering an inclusive environment, Colorado can unlock the full potential of its Black community and solidify its position as a leader in the space race. Let's work together to ensure everyone has a chance to reach for the stars! Do you have ideas on how to make Colorado's space industry more inclusive? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Become a Part of the Solution: Join the EDA for Black Communities! As a member of the EDA for Black Communities, you can join one of our committees responsible for connecting, convening, and catalyzing regional strategies to ensure Black communities are a thriving part of Colorado's booming economy.

  • The Fearless Fund Ruling: A Call for Equitable Economies The recent court decision against the Fearless Fund, a venture capital firm focused on Black women entrepreneurs, is a stark reminder of the work left to be done in creating equitable and inclusive economies. Arian Simone, the Fund's CEO, rightly calls the ruling "devastating" for the very communities it aimed to empower. But this shouldn't just be a setback for the Fearless Fund. It should be a wake-up call for all of us. The question isn't "should" we strive for diversity in business. It's a matter of "how" we dismantle the systemic barriers that prevent it from flourishing. Here's why: Black women entrepreneurs: They are a potent force for innovation and economic growth, yet they receive a miniscule fraction of venture capital funding. Diversity fosters better outcomes: Studies show companies with diverse leadership outperform their less-diverse counterparts. Equity benefits everyone: A level playing field strengthens the overall economy and creates opportunities for all. So, let's turn this moment of frustration into a catalyst for action. Here's how you can get involved: Educate yourself: Learn about the challenges faced by underrepresented groups in the business world. Join the EDA for Black Communities: As the Economic Development Association for Black Communities (EDABC), we connect, convene, and catalyze people, resources, and opportunities to ensure Black communities are positioned to prosper, grow, and thrive. Consider joining us to be part of the solution. Demand change: Hold corporations and institutions accountable for creating equitable opportunities. Together, let's build a future where the Fearless Fund's mission isn't seen as radical, but as the very foundation of a thriving and inclusive economy. #FearlessFund #DiversityInBusiness #EquitableEconomy
