Illinois’s new credit card law is unworkable chaos that benefits corporate megastores - paid for by small businesses and consumers. The Points Guy calls it out: “The biggest beneficiaries are the largest retailers, and the implementation would add friction to a process that safeguards your data and allows you to earn rewards on every swipe of your credit card.” Check out how this law will impact Illinois consumers and put credit card rewards at risk: https://lnkd.in/eEMjG_gu

#ICYMI: The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) voiced opposition to the Durbin-Marshall Credit Card Bill, warning leaders in Congress of its harmful impact on military families. DCUC’s Jason Stverak stated the bill’s, “unintended consequences threaten to significantly disrupt the financial services credit unions provide to military families, weaken consumer protections, and ultimately harm the financial well-being of those who serve our country.” Read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/em6zEQ5p

Legislation in Congress threatens Florida’s thriving economy. Florida tourism generated nearly $102 billion in 2022. The Durbin-Marshall Credit Card Bill “would force credit card issuers to reduce or eliminate the generous rewards programs many tourists rely on. These rewards, including cashback and travel points, make vacations more affordable, particularly for middle-income families.” Read Tampa resident Tom Gaitens’s op-ed in the Tampa Free Press: https://lnkd.in/eBy-8ZaG

Credit card rewards are essential to Georgia’s economy. A report released by Airlines 4 America (A4A) revealed that 385,251 visitors used credit card reward points to visit Georgia in 2022, supporting 5,690 Georgia jobs and generating a total economic impact of $650.6 million. However, the Durbin-Marshall Credit Card Bill would jeopardize these benefits by limiting the rewards programs that drive this economic activity. The Durbin-Marshall Credit Card Bill encourages less secure networks, exposing consumer data to security breaches along the way. A 2022 Federal Reserve study found that credit card transaction fees are hardly profitable for card issuers, raising questions about why this is a focal point for regulatory pressure. Sens. Durbin and Marshall are pushing mandates that could hurt hardworking families nationwide. Their proposed credit card mandates would mean LESS money in your pocket—at a time when many are already feeling the pressure. “[The Durbin-Marshall Credit Card Bill] will rewrite the way credit cards function and put a kibosh on rewards. The mandates put corporate mega-stores, not consumers, in charge of deciding how your credit card transactions are routed, effectively ending the current system.” Read EPC’s Richard Hunt’s op-ed for RealClear Markets: https://lnkd.in/g_8zsBwg

In his LTE for the La Crosse Tribune, Financial Services Professional Larry Vangen reminds readers that we have already witnessed the consequences of the Durbin-Marshall Credit Card Bill. “This is a story that’s happened before. Durbin pushed similar legislation over a decade ago on debit cards and the result, according to studies, was no more debit card rewards for consumers, zero cost savings at stores for consumers and increased profits for big box stores. The big box stores won at our expense.” Read the full letter here: https://lnkd.in/ehryhMFF

EPC Executive Chairman Richard Hunt joined Larry O'Connor and Julie Gunlock on 630 WMAL DC to discuss credit cards and the concerns around the Durbin-Marshall Credit Card Bill. “If this bill were to ever pass, you can kiss your reward points goodbye…This is just corporate America not wanting to pay their price for goods or services they receive from Visa and Mastercard.” Listen on 630 WMAL ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eawQjdhE
