About us

Proudly serving as Orange County, CA's sole non-profit art house theater, The Frida Cinema is a cultural institution that fulfills its mission -- to enrich, connect, and educate communities through the art of cinema -- by applying a curatorial approach to cinematic programming, focused on ensuring a diversity of offerings ranging from international, independent, foreign, documentary, LGBT, short, locally-produced, student, educational, and classic films, across a full spectrum of genres. Our cinematic programming is complemented with other avenues for cultural and civic engagement, including art shows, live music, dance, and theatrical performances; community presentations, panels and discussions; educational workshops; and so much more. Our organization also has a proud and celebrated history of partnering with arts, educational, and cause-based organizations and institutions in our community, both within and outside of our venue, in a variety of events ranging from collaborative film screenings to fundraisers to special community events. Christened both "Downtown Santa Ana's Cultural Anchor" and "OC's Year-Round Film Festival" by OC Weekly, The Frida Cinema has established itself as a safe and supportive space for artists to amplify their visions, passions, and voices. Since opening in 2014, The Frida Cinema has served as a home and supportive partner for dozens of film festivals, including SIKHLens Film & Arts Festival; Hola Mexico Film Fest; NGF: Next Generation of Filmmakers; and events showcasing the works of students from local elementary schools, high schools, and colleges and universities. The Frida Cinema has partnered with well over one hundred local institutions, raising funds and/or awareness for issues including human trafficking, homelessness, LGBT rights, suicide prevention, the humane treatment of animals, immigrants' rights, and domestic violence. "The Frida is anything but your typical theater." - Los Angeles Times
