The Dutch Data Protection Authority announced last week that Uber would be fined €290 million for transferring drivers’ data to the United States without a valid transfer tool under the GDPR, following the invalidation of Privacy Shield in July 2020. This decision has global implications and is not uniquely about Uber, as many American companies were in the same position after the annulment of Privacy Shield. FPF CEO Jules Polonetsky, VP for Global Privacy Dr. Gabriela Zanfir-Fortuna, Odia Kagan, Chair of Data Privacy Compliance and International Privacy at Fox Rothschild LLP, and Christopher Kuner, Affiliated Professor at the University of Copenhagen, Senior Privacy Counsel, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, and FPF Senior Fellow, will walk through the Dutch DPA decision and discuss its implications for companies and the additional complexities this ruling adds to the already challenging cross-border data transfer regime. We’ll go live at 12:00 pm ET!
