About us

Founded in 1885 by a small group of US Cavalry Officers at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and began publishing the Cavalry Journal in 1888. Through the years the association changed its name several times and is now known as the U.S. Cavalry & Armor Association. Now for 132 years the Association continues to publish the popular Cavalry and Armor Journal; hosts the Order of Saint George Awards program; and supports the U.S. Army Armor School’s the Best Tank Crew Gunnery and Best Scout Squad Competitions, both international competitions. Our mainstay, the Cavalry and Armor Journal, is arguably known around the world as the premiere Cavalry and Armor publication and for generating critical intellectual thought about mounted maneuver. We have been quite successful for the publication has been continually published since 1888. In fact, the U.S. Cavalry and Armor Association prints the journal for its members and the Cavalry and Armor community. The U.S. Cavalry and Armor Association currently serves over 4,500 members worldwide. Mission Statement: The U.S. Cavalry and Armor Association disseminates knowledge of the military art and sciences, with special attention to mounted maneuver in ground warfare and reconnaissance; to promote the professional development of its members; and to preserve and foster the spirit, the traditions and solidarity of Cavalry and Armor in the U.S. Army and USMC of the United States. The Association’s goal is to generate critical thought in mounted maneuver amongst its’ center of gravity --- the membership. It cannot continue without an active and strong membership base. Through the years it has struggled to grow a membership base. The high water mark for membership was 7,000 in World War II while the Infantry Association reached 100,000 and the Cavalry and Armor Association’s low point was in 1947 when membership dropped to 1,700. Currently, the Cavalry and Armor Association membership is approximately 4,500.
