Questioning existing gender narratives through critical thinking and meaningful community engagement in India

About us

113 million adolescent girls are an invisible population in India. Due to socio-cultural practices and conditioning, they are denied autonomy and a chance to discover their potential. The Gender Lab is changing this narrative by empowering adolescent girls in schools with 21st century skills to become changemakers in their community and break gender stereotypes they live in . We deliver this through a fellowship of young women from across India who have themselves battled gender bias growing up. They mentor these girls through 10 months and in turn build leadership and self awareness. Through this work, we also realized the need of engaging adolescent boys as allies. We create a safe space for them in schools to build awareness around gender, redefine masculinity and engage them in community action. We believe that through this process we promote the voice, agency and leadership of girls and women in India. Our work is currently being delivered under the following verticals : 1) Empowering Adolescent Girls : this includes the Avanti Young Women Leadership Program in Mumbai, Delhi and Jind (Haryana) 2) Empowering Women : includes The Gender Lab Fellowship (Mumbai and Jind, Haryana) and the alumni community 3) Redefining Masculinities : this includes our work with adolescent boys (TGL Boys Program) and educators through How We Raise Our Boys program.

Our team member Vijeta attended the EU-NGO forum organised by the European commission and HRD network in December. She writes, "It was meaningful to engage with HRDs from such diverse realities. It was my first time to be in such a space, it opened up a lot for me to understand the interconnectedness of the social issue and how it impacts the larger politics of the world. While we are aware of the reality of our own country and region, the forum also created a space to engage, listen and learn about what's happening in other parts of the world."

Our team member Niharika Ravi attended Oxfam-Asia Centre's 3-day Digital Advocacy Workshop in Bangkok, Thailand. They shared, "Attending the Digital Advocacy Workshop in Bangkok was an enriching experience for me. Learning in-depth about misinformation and disinformation, censorship, cybersecurity, and the ripple-effect of bad laws on digital spaces across countries, among others, was invaluable. The co-learning spaces created in the workshop through participant presentations were a great opportunity to understand what other organisations are doing and to learn from their experiences. Our final breakout discussion for collective reflection on moving forward after the workshop was definitely a highlight for me and was incredibly helpful towards networking and understanding where the synergies of diverse organisations across South Asia and the Asia Pacific can meet towards furthering our commitments to our respective causes through digital spaces. My biggest take-aways from the experience were that there is a need for us to better adapt ourselves to working within the offline-online continuum as CSOs and that it is essential for us to better understand the regulations related to Digital Activism that impact our advocacy and, in-turn, make efforts towards creating an impact on law and policy related to this space."
