Inspiring Kindness and Compassion towards Animals, Our Planet, and Each Other

About us

The Gentle Barn is a national nonprofit organization specializing in the rehabilitation of rescued animals and connecting their stories of survival and healing to the personal experiences of inner city, at-risk, and special needs children who have suffered physical, mental, or emotional trauma. By interacting with our animals and taking a hands-on role in their welfare, those who participate in our programs learn empathy, trust and forgiveness. Our mission is simple: Inspiring Kindness and Compassion towards Animals, Our Planet, and Each Other

  • Baby Love is 2 years old today 🥹 🎉 She was unexpectedly born early in the woods of our Tennessee location after we'd rescued her mom Audrey a few months earlier. Love was one of the strongest, healthiest, and most precious babies we had ever had, standing up within hours of being born and nursing with ease. She's continued that independent spirit as she's grown and has always welcomed us, showing her mom and big sister Truth how to be brave every day. Audrey, Truth, and Love will spend the rest of their lives together, getting the care that all animals deserve. Happy Birthday Love 🎂 #nonprofit #animalsanctuary #birthday #celebration #cows

  • At the Gentle Barn, we rescue farmed animals from abuse or neglect, many of whom have disabilities, and work tirelessly to meet their needs and heal their hearts. Once our animals realize they're home and safe with us, they in turn help humans. So many people who visit us see themselves in the these majestic animals, and when people with similar disabilities visit, they spend time with the animals, and they share their joint stories of strength. This #DisabilityPrideMonth, we're sharing some of our incredible animals ambassadors: We've rescued animals who've lost their limbs like Lolli, Dudley, Lyric, and Peggy, and have gotten them expert veterinary care and any prosthetics and wheelchairs they've needed, along with therapies, holistic treatments, friendships, and so much love. We've rescued blind and vision-impaired animals like Faith and Hiroka, and those who've gone blind as they've aged like Smudge and Snow White, and made sure they always have access to everything they need, along with sweet friends surrounding them, and lots of reading and music therapy. We've rescued animals with deformed legs like Worthy and Princess Pebble and have gotten them surgery, corrective boots, and therapies to help them feel comfortable, happy, and as mobile as they want to be. And there are so many stories of resilience in our barnyards. Thank you for being a part of their stories and allowing us to say "yes" when we're asked to bring in an animal with significant needs so we can give them the very best lives 💚 #nonprofit #animalsanctuary #goats #disabled #animalcare

  • This rescued cow who survived severe pneumonia after being born on a slaughterhouse floor and made headlines around the world is turning FOUR! When we rescued Lewis during the height of the pandemic, we had no idea how much it would take to heal him, or how much his story would resonate with people around the world, watching from afar as we raised him in our living room during the scorching hot summer of 2020. Now Lewis is a big, happy, playful boy, surrounded by friends and love! If you're in Southern California, make reservations to attend his birthday during our open-to-the-public Sunday on July 21: https://bit.ly/2SyGL65 Read more about how founders Ellie Laks and Jay Weiner rescued and healed Lewis, along with so many more stories about The Gentle Barn animals in Ellie's new book, "Cow Hug Therapy." • From terrified baby lambs to loving, confident sheep 🥹 Join us in wishing this very special herd at #TheGentleBarn #Tennessee a happy rescue anniversary! Two years ago, we rescued them from being sold for their meat or fleece and brought them home to our sanctuary. It took a while to earn their trust and make them happy. But through reading out loud to them, singing to them, and spending hours with them, they finally allowed us to become part of their family, and a part of our home. #animalrescue #healing #recovery #nonprofit #sanctuarylife

  • These donkeys were so scared when they arrived that they were shaking—now they're celebrating their 10th rescue anniversary! 🎉 Rescued from terrible places like a dumpster and being forced to smuggle drugs, donkeys Hope, Lulu, and Rosie have grown so much and love playing together at The Gentle Barn California. They were so traumatized from their pasts that it took us a very long time to be able to even be able to take them to relax in the pasture, but now they are happy and healthy, and allow us to put on their halters for walks, get brushed, and even eat treats from our hands. Rosie's treat smile is now legendary in the barnyard 🫶 Join us in wishing this sweet, playful family a happy rescue anniversary! • There are so many important things to do right away when we rescue new animals at The Gentle Barn, and helping them heal, rest, and recover is at the top of the list. As part of their recovery, either from illness, abuse, or after a neccesary procedure at the veterinarians, we give the animals extra Sun Chlorella USA Corp. superfood to flood their systems with good, replenishing nutrients. After Dottie Ann, her son Jordan, and her three daughters Jilly, Peggy Jo, and Alice were recently rescued, we got them spayed and neutered then brought them home to recover, giving them bowls of food mixed with Sun Chlorella upon arrival. This is an integral part of their care for the rest of their lives in sanctuary too, with #SunChlorella being added to their fresh food daily—the vitamins and healthy foods all work together to keep the animals happy and healthy 💚 #health #nonprofit #animalsanctuary #piglet #recovery #missouri

  • Our community is incredible 🙌 We posted on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn about needing names for our 3 newest rescued pigs—which people could submit when they donated a bale of hay—and we had a HUGE response. Here are the results of the naming! 👉 Watch for the naming reveal on cakes for each pig 🤩🍰 After we found mama pig Dottie Ann and her baby son Jordan wandering by a gas station and were able to eventually bring them home to The Gentle Barn Missouri, we discovered Dottie Ann had three grown daughters. We took the girls to the vet then brought them home to the nursery. We've been reading to them, giving them enrichment toys and offering them fun snacks along with their oats, grain, fruits and veggies. After a period of acclimation, now they all go out into the yard together to enjoy the sunshine ☀️ We're so happy the whole family has been reunited in sanctuary and they're settling into their new lives together. It's thanks to your support that we're able to continue this work, keep families together, and give the animals memorable names to remind them they're loved, respected, and part of the family 🫶 #newnames #nonprofit #animalsanctuary #sanctuarylife #fundraiser
