The Science of a Meaningful & Happy Life
About us
The Greater Good Science Center studies the psychology, sociology, and neuroscience of well-being, and teaches skills that foster a thriving, resilient, and compassionate society. Based at the University of California, Berkeley, the GGSC is unique in its commitment to both science and practice: not only do we sponsor groundbreaking scientific research into social and emotional well-being, we help people apply this research to their personal and professional lives. Since 2001, we have been at the fore of a new scientific movement to explore the roots of happy and compassionate individuals, strong social bonds, and altruistic behavior—the science of a meaningful life. And we have been without peer in our award-winning efforts to translate and disseminate this science to the public.

The Greater Good Science Center reposted this
Dear LinkedIn friends, like many of you, I’ve been feeling the weight of the U.S. presidential election. Beyond the news and constant election updates, there’s also a mix of anxiety and frustration that can be hard to shake off. So, instead of staying glued to the headlines, I decided to focus on something that might ease that weight—something that could transform division into understanding and conflict into connection. With my team at The Greater Good Science Center, I’m grateful to share our 7-Day Campaign for Connection Challenge as an option to help navigate these polarized times. Each day will introduce a new science-based skill—from listening with compassion to identifying shared goals—to help bridge divides. The campaign starts today, October 28, and we’d be honored to have you join us. Will you? https://lnkd.in/eSk4Qxez #2024CampaignforConnection Criss Cuervo Jason Marsh

Philip Zimbardo, a legend in social psychology who led the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment, passed away last week at the age of 91. Later in his career, Dr. Zimbardo shifted his focus from studying how good people can commit evil deeds to exploring "the banality of heroism," the idea that we all have the potential to perform heroic acts. His first article on this concept appeared in Greater Good in 2006. Nearly two decades later, his calls to nurture "the heroic imagination"—to help every individual recognize their potential to stand up in the face of injustice and demonstrate moral, as well as physical, courage—still resonate with us. "If we lose the ability to imagine ourselves as heroes and to understand the meaning of true heroism," he wrote, "our society will be poorer for it."
