About us

The Truman Library Institute is the member-supported, nonprofit partner of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, one of 15 presidential libraries of the National Archives. The Institute was founded by President Harry S. Truman to ensure that his presidential library would flourish - for generations to come - as a classroom for democracy that would both safeguard our democracy and serve to inspire young people, especially, to choose lives of purpose and public service. Working closely with its federal partners at the Truman Library, the Truman Library Institute draws on President Truman’s legacy of decisive leadership to enrich the public understanding of history, the presidency and America’s democratic ideals. This mission is achieved by engaging our community through world-class museum exhibits, a robust research grants program, print and digital communications, nationally acclaimed education programs, and special events and public programs, including the Howard & Virginia Bennett Forum on the Presidency, Harry S. Truman Book Award, Truman Medal for Economic Policy and Wild About Harry!, the Institute’s annual fundraising event.
