The Heart of Healthcare Podcast has long been a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, our status quo healthcare system has become heartless but they're shining a light on where there is heart. When 100 million Americans are in debt to the healthcare system, that is a "feature" not a "bug" of status quo health plans. Fortunately, community-owned health plans are already having a big impact which we chatted about during the podcast (watch https://lnkd.in/ggKj38qJ for a taste). After we stopped recording, Halle and I spoke about my POV that I wish governors would declare a public health emergency about the epidemic of preventable medical mistakes and financial toxicity happening in our hospitals. An average state (~6 million people) has 4-5 "9/11's" happen every year due to a combination of preventable medical mistake deaths (#3 cause of death after heart disease and cancer with about 400,000 deaths per year) and financial toxicity (#4 cause of death with 250,000 deaths due to self-rationing care due to its cost). If there's one litmus test of a healthcare system, it's how it addresses the full pregnancy/delivery journey. I've heard numerous people say they can't have more than one kid due to the cost and that doesn't speak to our maternal/infant outcomes which are a national embarrassment. As if that wasn't bad enough, it's even more awful for women of color.
I learned so much talking to Dave Chase, who is on a mission to end the 30-year heist of stolen income from the working middle class, on this week's episode of The Heart of Healthcare Podcast! Dave is working to popularize a new parallel economy: community-owned health plans (COHPs). He explains how these plans aim to transform healthcare from a driver of debt and bankruptcy to a driver of well-being and wealth. We cover: 🤝 The structure and benefits of community-owned health plans (COHPs) ⤴ How these plans can reduce healthcare costs while improving care quality 👩⚕️ The role of primary care, including direct primary care models, in reshaping healthcare delivery 🏢 Challenges with the current employer-based health insurance system ⚖ Recent legal developments pushing for change in employer-sponsored health plans Listen and subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts.
