To support self-sufficiency and abuse-free lives by creating and providing meaningful and sustainable pathways
About us
Since 1985, The Initiative has been a beacon of hope, championing the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities. Founded by Sharon Hickman, our journey began with 'HOW,' Handicapped Organized Women, empowering women with disabilities. The need for change was clear - existing support systems weren't designed for them. Thus, the 'Domestic Violence Initiative for Women with Disabilities' was born. In 2017, we embraced a new identity as 'The Initiative,' expanding our mission to serve all genders and address various forms of abuse. We are agents of transformation, advocating for justice, and creating a resilient, inclusive community.

Survivors of domestic violence in small towns like La Junta, CO, face unique challenges to their privacy and safety. Living where "everyone knows everyone" can make seeking help feel impossible. From fears about confidentiality to running into their abuser around town, survivors need more support and understanding. It’s crucial to ensure privacy and safe access to resources, no matter where they live. Denver needs guaranteed income in the 2025 budget! The Denver Guaranteed Income Now Coalition is calling on Office of Denver City Council to allocate $15 million over the next three years for direct cash assistance to those experiencing homelessness. Mayor Mike Johnston’s draft budget currently leaves this out, but we can make a difference. Let’s push City Council to run an amendment and fund this critical program. Contact your City Council member and let them know you support guaranteed income for a stronger, more equitable Denver! 📢 https://lnkd.in/g32miyb9 #GuaranteedIncomeNow #DenverBudget #SupportOurCommunity

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we honor the brave survivors who share their stories to inspire hope and courage. One Adams County woman is speaking out after enduring years of abuse, ultimately leading to a brutal attack while pregnant. Her journey reminds us that escaping the cycle of domestic violence is possible, and she encourages others to seek help. Let's stand together in support of survivors and work toward creating a safer future for all. 💜 #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth #SurvivorStories #HopeAndHealing https://lnkd.in/gcrRiQ7v

We are deeply concerned by the recent news regarding a deputy sheriff's arrest for domestic violence. Law enforcement plays a crucial role in addressing domestic violence, yet cultural challenges within the system can impact survivors' trust. Some officers perpetrating domestic violence at higher rates than the general population create contradictions that undermine this trust, making it harder for survivors to report abuse or feel protected. Transparency and accountability are essential to building a system that protects everyone, especially those affected by domestic violence. https://lnkd.in/gtT2ma9y

California has enacted a groundbreaking car data privacy law aimed at protecting survivors of domestic violence. This new law requires automakers to implement safeguards for internet-connected cars, including enabling drivers to easily disable location access and ensuring restraining orders are processed quickly. By addressing the growing issue of abusers using car technology to stalk and harass survivors, this law represents a significant step forward in the fight against domestic violence. Learn more about how this legislation could impact survivors nationwide. #CarDataPrivacy #DomesticViolencePrevention #SafetyFirst https://lnkd.in/gJkn84Yd
