The U.S. Department of Education is taking a major step forward to identify measures that can help students, especially those from low-income families, get to and through college. According to TICAS VP Tanya I. Garcia, the program is a "strong vehicle for spreading best practices."

We're excited to announce an innovative expansion of our Anti-Poverty & Basic Needs work! Stay tuned as we begin work to improve #CollegeAccess for families who are #TANF eligible in five target states. #ParentingStudents
Leading Basic Needs Expert | Equity Advocate | Systems Change Strategist | Champion for Improved Access to Postsecondary Education
📢 I am thrilled to share that Anti-Poverty & Basic Needs team at The Institute for College Access & Success is embarking on a multi-year project working with five states to improve access to postsecondary education for families eligible for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Family (#TANF) program. It is imperative that we shift programs from mandating low-wage work to ensuring #parentingstudents have access to #postsecondary pathways that lead to family-sustaining wages. I refer to this as my #dream project because this is a full circle moment for me. Almost 25 years ago I sat in my welfare caseworkers office as a young low-income single mom as I was told I could no longer take classes full-time and work part time due to the restrictions on education in TANF. To say I was devastated is an understatement. 💪🏼That day was pivotal for me in multiple ways. Although it contributed to my "four-year" degree taking twelve years, it also fueled my commitment to find and remove these barriers for others. 🙏 I am deeply grateful for the support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation for believing in this project and cause. 🫂 To all the parenting students out there and the parents who #dream of becoming students I say, do not give up hope. We are in this together. We will share more about this work in the coming months. TICAS' Carrie R. W.’s latest op-ed in TIME dives into the state of food insecurity for college students: "This food insecurity crisis didn’t come out of the blue. College students have struggled to access sufficient food for decades." Congress needs to #ModernizeSNAP to better support students, allowing them to pursue #HigherEd without sacrificing their basic needs.
