This summer I had the amazing opportunity of being a Housing Coordinator for an all-men’s veteran shelter, with ICL. During my internship, I managed a caseload of 60 clients, providing each client with resources and assistance with finding permanent housing. Over my time with ICL, I have been able to match 14 un-housed veterans to permanent homes and apartments; in NYC, where housing is an everpresenting issue. Through my time with ICL, I have learned how systems play a direct role and effect the lives of the most vulnerable communities. While working with clients, frequently majority of my role was ensuring them their validity in this capitalistic bureaucratic system that has pushed them further into their issues. All too often, even the key players in these systems who come in with great intentions, find themselves perpetuating harm. This internship allowed me to view my position, those around me, and the people we are there to serve. Holistic serving, with empathy and knowledge, leads to change. Keep evaluating yourself, your positionality, and your impact!

Sending a HUGE thanks to Council Member Crystal Hudson for supporting our Emerson-Davis Family Center with a generous $1.5 million in capital funding! 👏 Our innovative Emerson-Davis program offers 24/7 support for adults with mental health challenges who have been or are at risk of being separated from their children. Thanks to this funding, New York City’s one-of-a-kind supportive housing program is getting a makeover! This vital funding will contribute to the construction of a brand-new 12-story building with 103 affordable housing units. Thank you, Council Member Hudson, for supporting Emerson-Davis over the years and well into the future!
