Today, JAXPORT welcomed Rear Admiral Douglas Schofield, Commander of the Seventh U.S. Coast Guard District. As District Commander, he is responsible for all USCG operations in the Southeast U.S. and the Caribbean Basin, including Florida and Puerto Rico. Rear Admiral Schofield toured cargo operations and discussed JAXPORT’s role as the top U.S. port for trade with Puerto Rico. He also saw how modernized terminals and cargo-handling equipment support the port’s role as one of the nation’s 17 Strategic Seaports that move U.S. military cargo. Congratulations to these deserving students, just in time for back-to-school 📚 The ILA Local 1408 Scholarship Fund awarded scholarships to 22 area college-bound students today during a ceremony at Edward Waters University. Established in 1995 by Jacksonville labor union leader Charles Spencer, the ILA 1408 scholarship program has awarded more than 1,000 scholarships totaling more than a million dollars throughout its nearly 30-year history. “Every year, my goal is to provide as many deserving students as I can with the opportunity to reach their dreams,” Spencer said. “I am thankful for all of the support in making sure the Fund continues its mission to provide financial assistance to academic high achievers or financially disadvantaged graduating students.” Read more about the scholarship and meet one of this year’s recipients: https://bit.ly/4cEc2Yp
