Congratulations to Olivia Lewis, MPP, for being chosen as a New America Us@250 Fellow, a prestigious national fellowship focused on reimagining the American narrative. Olivia, a 2017 Kresge Communications intern and BridgeDetroit reporter, will work on a project involving Detroit's I-375 Reconnecting Communities project. The recent edition of The Chronicle of Philanthropy ran an article entitled: “After 30 Years of Environmental Grant Making, Lois DeBacker Remains Optimistic About the Future.” Lois’s reflections are a tour de force, describing where environmental philanthropy has traveled, the challenges it now confronts, and where it might head in the future. It could not be a more powerful reminder of how very much Lois has contributed to the field, to the planet, and to Kresge. #environment #philanthropy

In 2015, Kresge formalized its focus on place-based community development outside of Detroit by forming the American Cities Practice and signified the foundation's commitment to building opportunity in places across the country. The Practice, which later became the American Cities Program, was instrumental in expanding Kresge’s community development work to the focus cities of New Orleans, Memphis and Fresno. Last week, we had the privilege of hosting Jim Bildner, CEO of Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, for an insightful session on "Unleashing the Potential of Philanthropy to Solve Problems" with Philanthropy Australia. Jim's extensive experience in venture philanthropy and his role on the board of The Kresge Foundation provided invaluable perspectives on driving social impact. Some key takeaways from the event: 🔍 Framework for Solving Problems: – Understand the Problem: Dive deep into the issues you're addressing. – Define Your Endgame: Set clear short and long-term targets. – Know the Ecosystem: Identify gaps, focus efforts, and leverage existing resources. 💡 Funding Models for Maximum Impact: – Multi-Year Support: Provide sustained, flexible funding for long-term growth. – Crowd in Other Capital: Use your funding to attract additional investments. Capability Building: Offer leadership development, strategic guidance, and opportunities for connection. – Strategic Use of Capital: Utilise grant money wisely and consider loans when possible. In June, we're hosting a short course for social enterprises with Jim on operationalising and scaling for impact.
