Here's our #JTOTW! One of the top things our candidates ask us about is how to answer questions about pay, and we want you to get paid what you're worth! That said, it's important that you advocate for yourself and know your numbers. You can get a pretty good idea of the typical pay for a role by talking to your network and visiting salary sites, but the conversation can still be tricky. "What's your desired salary" makes many of our candidates nervous, but did you know it can be more of a discussion? When asked the question, get more info about how compensation is structured. You'll want to know how the role pays out to give the recruiter or manager a more accurate representation of your compensation needs. For example, if your desired salary is $100,000, you'll want to think about the different structures of how you get to that number. It could be any of the following: 1. You want a salary of $100,000 total. 2. You want $100,000 as the base salary, plus a bonus, commission opportunities, or stock options. 3. You want your total compensation to be $100,000, but you can do that at a base of $95,000 with an annual bonus that gets you to $100,000. The fact of the matter is, it's your right to know how a role pays out so you can ask for what you need! So, the next time you're asked for your desired salary, ask some follow up questions. Is there a commission structure? Is their overtime pay for big releases, or will my hourly rate stay the same? Are there typically annual bonuses? Once you hear their answer, be READY to share your total compensation and how it's broken down, so they know how you arrived at your number. If they share the structure with you, avoid saying "I'm flexible to whatever the market rate is." The discussion should come from both sides, so if they're being transparent with you, you'll want to be transparent in return. Want more tips on how to talk money?
