Exciting news for #Michigan! Last Thursday, Michigan legislature approved two bills that will require schools to use the science of reading in early literacy instruction. The bills came to pass shortly after test results demonstrated that “third grade proficiency in reading and writing was at an all time low” with only 39.6% of third graders considered proficient. Governor Gretchen Whitmer had this to say: “To build a brighter future for Michigan, we must ensure our students have the skills they need to succeed, including literacy, which is directly tied to lifelong education, income, and health outcomes. Today’s commonsense, bipartisan package will allow teachers and tutors to use proven science of reading strategies to improve literacy.” Read more here with Chalkbeat Detroit: https://lnkd.in/eGWep4ms #ScienceOfReading #Education #Detroit #Literacy #TheLiteracyLab

Since 2014, the NAACP has been a strong advocate for improving literacy outcomes in the U.S., passing a resolution on dyslexia and launching a national literacy campaign. This summer, over 1,000 NAACP delegates gathered in Las Vegas to discuss critical civil rights issues, including the nation’s literacy crisis. In a historic move, the NAACP passed two resolutions declaring literacy as a civil right, aiming to transform how reading is taught in U.S. schools. The NAACP emphasizes that “Literacy is a civil right, and progress is a moral imperative.” They highlight that low literacy rates stem from the widespread failure to implement evidence-based teaching practices. The resolutions call for educators, teacher preparation programs, funders, and government leaders to unite around a shared vision for improving literacy education.
