Restoring mangroves for people and planet

About us

A lot of planting projects fail leaving communities without the benefits and protection from mangroves. It shouldn’t be this difficult. MAP provides the training and education programs needed to effectively conserve and restore these vital ecosystems, to help coastal communities and reduce the effects of climate change

  • If your mangrove site sits adjacent to one of these wetland habitats, don’t plant mangroves on them! ❌ Intertidal mudflats ❌ Sand flats ❌ Coral reefs ❌ Seagrass beds These habitats support a high diversity of crustaceans, molluscs, coral, birds, mammals and turtles, many of which are threatened or endemic species. 🪿 What’s more, they’re valuable breeding and feeding sites for many migrating bird species, including geese, ducks, shorebirds, and gulls. Mudflats, in particular, provide a critical resting stop along migration routes. Converting these internationally important sites by planting mangroves can destroy vital habitats for these species, contributing to their further decline. #WetlandConservation #SpeciesConservation

Check out the interview with Mongabay by #CarolynCowan on #MangroveRestoration “Mangroves are not just about carbon credits; we have to also include the element of biodiversity when we restore them,” Siriporn SRIARAM tells Mongabay. “We should also be focusing on elevating livelihoods, helping people earn an income from mangroves and improving the experience for people visiting coastal areas, promoting them through sustainable tourism.” Planting on mudflats also disrupts vital coastal ecosystems. Far from the inert brown wasteland they might seem at first sight, mudflats are “teeming” with life, says Petch Manopawitr, president of the Bird Conservation Society of Thailand (BCST), the Thai affiliate of BirdLife International. “Invertebrates like sea worms and mud-dwelling organisms provide an ideal food source for a diverse array of shorebirds, especially many globally threatened migratory species [such as the] spoon-billed sandpiper and Nordmann’s greenshank,” Petch Manopawitr Ph.D. tells Mongabay. “Vast areas of mudflat are not suitable for mangrove planting.” https://lnkd.in/gbcC6FT3 #ThailandMangroveAlliance #DMCR #BCST #BlueRenaissance #Biodiversity #BlueCarbon #NowForNature #30x30 #GBF

  • 🎨 Engaging youth in mangrove conservation isn't just about facts and figures—it's about inspiring creativity! This is why at MAP we love using art as an educational tool: 🖼️ Drawing helps young minds recognize and celebrate the beauty of mangroves 💚 Creative projects foster a highly personal and often emotional bond with nature 🗣️ Art gives young people a platform to express their own environmental concerns and anxieties 🌍 Sharing artwork across countries builds bridges between cultures and fosters solidarity among coastal youths Have you seen the amazing submissions from our latest mangrove art contest? 👀 Explore the gallery here: https://lnkd.in/dAGtPwiM #MangroveConservation #ArtContest #MangroveRestoration

  • 💧 Hydrology plays a crucial role in mangrove conservation. As waves wash in and tides come in and out, water must be able to flow freely to stabilize sediments and ensure mangrove root systems can function properly. 👉 Here are a few ways you can ensure there’s enough water flowing in your site. (Keep in mind that hydrological techniques vary based on the site characteristics, geography, and weather patterns.) #Hydrology #MangroveRestoration

  • 🌳 We believe that reversing the loss of mangroves is a collaborative effort. Without healthy mangrove ecosystems, communities will face food shortages, sea level rises will displace millions across the globe, and countless wildlife species will be wiped out forever. That’s why we take a holistic, hands-on approach to education, training, and capacity-building. Your donations allow us to deliver mangrove best practices in the Bahamas, introduce conservation to school children in Belize, conduct restoration consultancy in East Kalimantan, and so much more. More importantly, your support means we’re empowering communities to take conservation into their own hands. 💪 No matter how much you give, you’re ensuring millions of people reap the benefits of mangrove ecosystems for years to come. Take a stand for the future you want 👉 https://lnkd.in/eWxh3paU #MangroveConservation #CapacityBuilding #NatureBasedSolutions

  • Mangroves for carbon credits: What’s your opinion? 🇹🇭 Thailand recently announced that it will add thousands of hectares of mature mangroves into its carbon market. After initially inviting private companies to invest in mangrove planting and restoration activities to earn carbon credits, the country then launched the Coastal Community Mangrove for Carbon Credit programme, which allows frontline communities to leverage mature mangroves in their area. Thailand isn’t the first country to offer such a scheme. Mangroves’ incredible capacity to capture and store carbon has led many nations to realize the potential for investment. ⚠️ But critics say this allows the private sector, including oil and gas conglomerates and construction firms, to exploit established mangrove ecosystems and the communities that rely on them. What’s more, the carbon market is in its infancy and we still have no reliable way of measuring the impact of carbon credits. We’d love to hear your thoughts 👇 Read more about Thailand’s initiative 👉 https://lnkd.in/dPpwCuAD #CarbonCredits #Mangroves #Communities

🚨 We were alarmed to hear about a new Deutsche Bahn project in Amazonia that will involve the destruction of swathes of mangroves. The railway and port project will slice through Brazil's coastline impacting the Amazon ecosystem, valuable mangrove habitats, and Indigenous community land, putting people and wildlife at risk. Help us halt the project in its tracks. Sign the petition now 👉 https://lnkd.in/dUvTEk8j #SavetheAmazon #MangroveConservation

  • 🤔 What’s the difference between restoration and rehabilitation? 🌱 Restoration typically refers to bringing an ecosystem back to its original, pre-disturbance state. Many restoration efforts involve planting schemes. However MAP’s science-based approach shows that a more holistic, coordinated programme that involves experts and stakeholders from various disciplines, including ecology, hydrology, coastal dynamics, and sociology, results in more sustained, long-term benefits. 🪵 ‘Rehabilitation’ refers to recovery of ecosystem functions and processes. This doesn’t necessarily mean re-establishing the pre-disturbance condition, but may instead focus on optimizing biodiversity and ecosystem services by partially replacing characteristics of that ecosystem that have been lost or damaged. Do you need help deciding which approach will be most sustainable for your site? Get in touch 👉 info@mangroveactionproject.org #MangroveConservation #Restoration #Rehabilitation
