Special education programs in the US are brimming with a record number of students, and there aren't enough resources to support them. Between 2022 and 2023, 7.5 million students qualified for special-education programs, for speech impairments, ADHD, autism, and more. Special ed students currently make up about 15.2% of the student population in the public schooling system, which is a 2.2% increase from 10 years ago, per federal data. So what's behind the rise? It's not just one thing. The education gaps from the pandemic are partly to blame, but also the drop in stigma surrounding special ed programs in recent years. But budget restraints have made it nearly impossible to support the growing needs. The federal law that made way for the special education system calls for up to 40% of the service costs to be covered by federal funding. Yet contributions typically don't reach that high and have actually fallen since 2010, per the DOE. 📸: Unsplash
