Earlier this month, Moynihan Public Service Fellow Jennifer Zingone joined the Bean Voyage Women Powered Coffee Summit in Veracruz, Mexico! The summit explored the vital intersection of gender equity and sustainability in coffee production. Jennifer highlighted how women farmers, despite being key drivers of sustainable practices, often face barriers to equitable pay and access to resources. She said, “We also discussed the broader implications of climate change on global policies and the pressing need for international collaboration to protect small-scale farmers and ensure fair trade practices.” We are inspired by our fellows' dedication to tackling critical challenges that will shape our global future! #theMoynihanCenter #ccny #colinpowellschool

Advancing public scholarship and public service
About us
The Moynihan Center at The City College of New York (CCNY) advances the twin goals of public scholarship and public service. Taking inspiration from Senator Moynihan’s celebrated career, the Center cultivates leaders who cross the boundaries between critical thinking, public service practice, and popular communication. Through two signature fellowship programs and a rich slate of public events, the Center works to ensure that the next generation of public scholars and public servants reflects the diversity of viewpoints and lived experiences represented at City College and beyond.

Yesterday, the Moynihan Center, in collaboration with the Master's Program in International Affairs, the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership, and the Anne and Bernard Spitzer Chair in Political Science, welcomed authors Jonathan Blake and Nils Gilman to Shepard Hall to discuss their new book, “Children of a Modest Star: Planetary Thinking for an Age of Crises.” The conversation was moderated by Professor Nicholas Rush Smith in front of an enthusiastic audience of Moynihan Public Service Fellows and CCNY students. Blake and Gilman drew on intellectual history, political philosophy, and earth science to reimagine the role of governing institutions in combatting multi-layered planetary crises. After their presentation, students had the opportunity to engage with the authors through a Q&A session followed by a reception. Thank you to everyone who joined us! On Thursday night, the Moynihan Center had the privilege of hosting an event as part of Congo in Harlem Week. Moynihan Center Leader-in-Residence, Dr. Tatiana Carayannis, along with Dr. José Mvuezolo Bazonzi presented on the complex history of war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as represented in graffiti at the Gbadolité Airport. The discussion was enriched by a collection of photographs taken by Dr. Carayannis. These compelling images showcased charcoal inscriptions left by combatants at Gbadolité Airport during the conflict. The drawings depict weapons, religious symbols, scripture, individual names, and even phone numbers, and underscore the fraught relationship between war, power, and memory. Following the presentation, guests were encouraged to explore the gallery and reflect on these themes in conversation with each other. Thank you to Dr. Carayannis and Dr. Bazonzi for their insights, and to everyone who attended the event! #themoynihancenter #ccny #colinpowellschool
