It's that time of year again– back-to-school season is upon us. Let’s take a moment to review some #safety basics. With these tips, drivers can ensure a safer commute for #Texas students and avoid expensive fines, citations, and #insurance complications. 🚌 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆: • Yellow flashing lights mean a bus is preparing to stop to load/unload students. Slow your vehicle and prepare to stop. • Red Flashing Lights with an extended stop sign mean a bus is stopped and students are getting on or off. • Never pass a stopped school bus. • Drivers must come to a complete stop for the school bus— unless traveling on the opposite side of a roadway with a physical divider (like a median). • Failing to stop for a School Bus can result in a fine of $500 to $1,250, a license suspension, and even jail time. • School buses make frequent stops. Remain cautious if you encounter a school bus on the road and be prepared to come to a complete stop when necessary. 🚸 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆: • When approaching a posted School Zone, stay alert, be cautious, and reduce your speed. • Traffic fines for violations like speeding increase (and sometimes double) in School Zones. • School Zones generally extend 45 minutes before and 30 minutes after school hours. Traffic and pedestrian activity are likely to be highest during these times. • However, campuses can be active at all hours due to extracurricular activities, and students traveling to or from campus. It’s important to always be cautious when approaching a school zone— especially for pedestrians and bicyclists. • Check your routes for possible School Zone changes. • School Zone speed limits and boundaries can be adjusted from one school year to the next. Stay alert, especially in School Zones you feel “familiar with” as changes may have been made. • Do not use a cell phone while driving. In Texas, cell phone use is banned in all active School Zones and can result in a $200 fine. 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀?
