Studying the neuroscience of learning, memory and related functions. Celebrating 20 years of discovery & impact in 2022!
About us
The Picower Institute is a community of scientists dedicated to understanding the mechanisms that drive learning and memory and related functions such as cognition, emotion, perception and consciousness. Institute researchers explore the brain at multiple scales, from genes and molecules, to cells and synapses, to circuits and systems, producing novel insights into how disruptions in these mechanisms can lead to developmental, psychiatric or neurodegenerative disease. Celebrating 20 years of discovery & impact in 2022!

A new study by scientists at MIT and Vanderbilt adds evidence that conscious cognition seems to depend on cortical communication. Under anesthesia, crosstalk between sensory and cognitive regions of the brain breaks down. #neuroscience #consciousness #brain

A new story in Nature takes a deep look at the state of 40Hz research for Alzheimer’s and other conditions. While we all await the results of the large-scale human trial, our lab continues its work too, both in human volunteers and mouse models. Careful, rigorous investigation is necessary for understanding the molecular, cellular, biochemical and neurocircuitry mechanisms by which 40Hz sensory stimulation produces its apparent benefits. It’s gratifying to see some other groups also engaging in serious study.

Today in PNAS: New statistical models based on rigorous physiological data from more than 100 surgeries provide objective, accurate measures of “nociception,” the body’s subconscious perception of pain. The advance could help anesthesiologists better manage it during surgery to ensure patients receive optimal pain control with minimal side effects. #surgery #anesthesiology #neuroscience #pain #MIT
Research quantifying “nociception” could help improve management of surgical pain

On Sept. 24 and 25 please join us at The Picower Institute for the Kuggie Vallee Distinguished Lectures and Workshop, which celebrate the achievements of women in science and seeks to inspire future successes. Michelle Monje and Erin Schuman will give keynote talks. The next day Kara McKinley, Susan Silbey and Stacie Weninger will lead workshops and then all five will convene for a panel discussion. Many thanks to my co-organizers Gloria Choi, Myriam Heiman, Elly Nedivi, and Sara Prescott. 🪼Jellyfish and humans parted ways evolutionarily just after neurons emerged. Now that there's a genetically tractable model, jellyfish provide exceptional opportunities to study nervous system evolution, function and regeneration, according to a new review paper by Karen Cunningham, David Anderson and Brady Weissbourd: https://lnkd.in/gi8sGBMT #neuroscience #evolution #MIT #biology
