Crossover Step is an exercise that gives injured athletes a safer path to recovery. By practicing this left-over-right movement (and then the reverse when the moving leg is switched), Quick Board users get used to setting up quick cuts or making a rapid movement to get their balance. Being able to monitor both legs' data during this exercise allows clinicians and therapists to spot how much of a deficit remains and further decrease likelihood of a non-contact reinjury! #crossover #movement #physicaltherapy #legs #acl #aclr

Proprioception + Movement Improvement Proprioception is the ability to move in space safely and normally without having to look down. We use it when we walk across the street, descend a flight of stairs, or run across a sports field. Because of how much we depend on proprioception to get around, it can be easy to take it for granted. But research shows that actively training proprioception can have big benefits for both healthy and injured people. The systematic review cited below amplifies the efficacy of proprioceptive exercises in rehabilitation. Its consideration of over 70 studies found that "proprioceptive training led to comparable gains in both proprioceptive (+46%) and motor performance (+45%)." They also discovered that no matter whether the patients from these studies were healthy or recovering from a neurological injury, proprioceptive training boosted sensorimotor performance. A strong case for prioritizing proprioception in athletic and physical therapy regimens! #proprioception #healing #coordination #running #walking #aclr

Exercise Highlight: 1 Leg 1 jump Need to quickly assess jump height? Or determine ground contact times? What if you want to spot deficits in lower extremity performance before they become injuries? This simple paired vertical jump exercise can give you all of this data in just a few seconds. Users simply jump once on each leg, and the Quick Board's software calculates height and impact. If the resultant data is similar, your patient or athlete is performing/recovering well. if not, it's time to keep working! #verticaljump #athlete #physicaltherapy #assessment #evaluation

Testing Subjective Results Aids Recovery Asking a patient how they're feeling regularly over the course of a physical therapy plan is always a good practice. Part of a full recovery is confidence, and without its presence pushing the patient forward, full recoveries are less likely. However, if the patient's self-opinion of recovery is prioritized too much, some problems can still stick through the cracks. Take this research from the journal of NeuroRehabilitation (cited below) as an example. Symptomatic concussed athletes were put through the same tests as asymptomatic, seemingly recovered concussed athletes. Some of the symptomatic concussed athletes denied that they felt badly, and all participants who did this performed badly on a series of evaluation tests. All of the asymptomatic concussed athletes performed better, as their self-recognition of recovery was accurate. The takeaway here is that even though a patient's word is always important, their word has to line up with their neuro performance before they can be cleared! #neuroscience #concussion #physicaltherapy #evaluation #returntosport

Foot fire is the most popular Quick Board exercise, and for good reason; it's a way to rapidly assess a user's explosiveness and lower extremity speed. Because the movement the foot fire requires is simply moving the legs up and down in place, it's the exercise that most patients and athletes use to get started. But if you're looking for more of a challenge/workout, this Quicksteps exercise operates as a sort of "staggered foot fire." The objective is still to touch the front two sensors as quickly and as often as possible, but it integrates this backstep movement. Proprioception and lower extremity symmetry are tested in a new way, and are improved as users grind for best scores! #coordination #speed #physicaltherapy #athlete #improvement #gameplan #endurance

Neuro Work Exposes the Bad and Highlights the Good Neurocognitive tests are the key to good outcomes when training athletic teams or rehabilitating their injured players. They reconnect the brain and the body when they begin to drift apart and show coaches and clinicians exactly how far athletes and patients have come on their journeys to improve. An August 2024 study published by the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery, and Arthroscopy (cited below) demonstrate both sides of this coin. 32 post-ACLR patients and 32 control participants each performed a single-leg hop assessment, completed neurocognitive tests, then returned to jump again. The results? Both the ACLR patients and the controls were worse at the single-leg hops after the neurocognitive assessments, demonstrating that neuro work will show off your shortcomings, no matter how healthy you are. However, within just the ACLR group, neuro work disrupted some athletes--those who were farther along in their recovery and exhibited less cognitive load--significantly less! If you work to help people move better, be it medicinally or athletically, it's always good to throw some neuro work in the mix. There's always something to improve upon! #neurocognitive #ACLR #injury #athlete #recovery #physicaltherapy #jump

Exercise Highlight: Shoulder Stability React Arm strength is a key to success in many popular sports, and core strength comes in handy when balancing or making quick cuts and turns without falling. Training both of these disciplines simultaneously gives an athlete a better sense of the connectedness of their body's systems and builds overall strength. But what about an exercise that elevates these disciplines? This reaction-based exercise still requires the board user to use their arms and core to stay upright for an extended period of time, but adds on the array exercise where they must touch the red dot. This trains external focus and helps the athlete move their hands accurately under exertion without looking. By training this array repeatedly, the body's systems synch up even more! #athlete #exercise #balance #corestrength #athletictraining #workout

Components of ACL Recovery ACL injury is one of the most common threats facing athletes today, as it can be caused by contact and lack thereof. The recovery process for these injuries is long and difficult, but a good rehab strategy can ensure good and long-lasting results that don't lead to reinjury. According to a study from the journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy (cited below), there are four disciplines that each have a hand in producing ideal ACL injury recovery. These disciplines are: 💡Neuroscience (emphasizing the brain's role in rehabilitation) 🦿Biomechanics (allowing the body's connection points to heal) 🖐️Motor Control (retraining the visual-bodily connection) 🧠Psychology (making sure the patient is motivated and ready to return) How do you implement these principles into your physical therapy regimens for post-ACLR? How have you seen your athletes improve as a result? What advice would you give to clinicians/therapists looking to do the same? #physicaltherapy #neuroplasticity #acl #aclr #recovery #improvement #psychology
