On the set with Channel 7 news discussing #Menthol Did you know.."Menthol cigarettes have been found to increase the likelihood of developing nicotine dependence and addiction more quickly than non-menthol cigarettes. Studies have shown that African American smokers, who predominantly use menthol cigarettes, are more likely to exhibit signs of nicotine dependence at an earlier age and with lower levels of consumption compared to non-menthol cigarette smokers. This rapid development of dependence makes it significantly harder for African American smokers to quit, contributing to the ongoing health disparities seen in smoking-related diseases within this community." #quittobacco #roswellpark

Did the Affirmative Action Ban Work? A year after the Supreme Court's landmark decision to strike down affirmative action, we are beginning to see its impacts on college applications. But the question remains: did the ban work? A recent study by Common App provides some intriguing insights: Stable Application Trends: Despite expectations, application behavior across racial groups has remained unchanged. Applications from Latinx and Black students increased by 10% and 9%, respectively, aligning with past trends. White and Asian students saw a minor increase of 1%. Selective Institutions: The number of minority applicants to highly selective institutions (acceptance rates of 25% or less) did not significantly change, suggesting stability in application behavior. Expert Insights: Brian Kim, Common App’s Director of Data Science and Research, noted that the variations are within normal fluctuations and don’t indicate significant shifts due to the Supreme Court decision. This contrasts with past state-level affirmative action bans, significantly impacting applicant behaviors. Future Data: The real test will be the demographic makeup of the incoming class 2028. The new FAFSA rollout is also expected to impact enrollment trends, making it difficult to isolate the effects of the affirmative action ban. Implications: Diversity in Admissions: The fear of a sharp decline in diversity may be overblown regarding application numbers. However, enrollment figures will provide a clearer picture. Alternative Measures: Institutions may need to explore new ways to maintain or enhance diversity, focusing on factors beyond race. Long-Term Effects: Ongoing analysis is essential to understanding the full impact of the ban and ensuring fairness and equal treatment in college admissions. While the immediate effects appear muted, the long-term implications of the affirmative action ban will unfold over the coming years. Continuous monitoring and adaptation will be key for institutions striving to uphold their diversity commitments in a post-affirmative action landscape. #HigherEducation #AffirmativeAction #CollegeAdmissions #Diversity #Inclusion #StudentSuccess #CommonApp #SCOTUS

During a diversity workshop last night, a group member casually used the term "Colored" to describe Black and Brown individuals. While it wasn't said in a malicious tone, it still caught me off guard. What struck me even more was that the facilitator didn't acknowledge or correct it. My initial reaction was to echo the word "Colored" to the group, almost in disbelief, to bring attention to what was said. After about 30 seconds of uncomfortable silence from the group, I felt compelled to address it myself. It's disheartening to realize that in 2024, we're still grappling with language like this. To provide context, historically, the term "Colored" has been used as a derogatory label, particularly during periods of racial segregation and discrimination. It served to justify unequal treatment and segregation of non-white racial groups, perpetuating a deeply entrenched system of racial hierarchy and oppression. Today, using "colored" as a racial descriptor is widely recognized as offensive and outdated. It carries with it a painful legacy of racism and discrimination. Reflecting on the incident, I can't help but wonder whose responsibility it was to address it. In a group that claims to be racially conscious, why was I the only one who felt compelled to stop the discussion and address the elephant in the room? Shouldn't the facilitator have intervened? These questions linger, highlighting the ongoing need for education and awareness in combating racial insensitivity. #pullingtheracecard #racismstillexist #Theracecard #change #diversityequityinclusion #difficultconversations #educate #highereducation #rightwing #corporatelearning

Is DEI a fad? Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is not a fad; rather, it represents a commitment to fostering a workplace or societal environment that values and includes individuals from diverse backgrounds. The focus on DEI has gained prominence in recent years as organizations and societies recognize the importance of creating environments that are equitable and inclusive. The push for DEI is driven by a variety of factors, including a growing awareness of the benefits of diversity, the desire for fair and just societies, and the recognition that diverse perspectives can lead to more innovative and effective solutions. Organizations are increasingly understanding that promoting diversity and creating an inclusive culture are not only ethical imperatives but also contribute to improved performance and a more positive work environment. While there may be trends and buzzwords associated with DEI, the underlying principles are rooted in the pursuit of fairness, equal opportunities, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their background. As societal values evolve, DEI is likely to remain an important aspect of how organizations and communities strive to create more inclusive and equitable spaces.
