🎉 We celebrated a huge milestone yesterday—Fund for Quality reached ten years of impact in expanding access to high-quality early care and education in Philadelphia. It was a fantastic gathering with partners, funders, community members, and of course, the childcare providers who are at the heart of this program. Our host, Pee Wee Prep graciously welcomed us to their beautiful new space in West Philadelphia, which exemplifies everything FFQ stands for. Over the past ten years, the FFQ has achieved these remarkable outcomes: ⭐ 50 Childcare expansion locations ⭐ 3,250 New Seats for Philadelphia children created and counting Thank you to everyone who made this celebration possible, including: -Our partner, PUBLIC HEALTH MANAGMENT CORPORATION (PHMC) -Our funders, William Penn Foundation and Vanguard's Stong Start for Kids Program -The Pee Wee Prep staff for event support and students for their lovely performance -The students at The Workshop School who crafted all our swag -Foodnastics, Inc. for providing delicious catering -Our honorary guest, Kevin Maguire, who has been instrumental in the success of the construction process for FFQ expansion projects -Photographer Victoria Wilcox for capturing the joy of the day -Reinvestment Fund childcare researchers: Jacob Rosch and Emily Dowdall And a huge thank you to our dedicated Reinvestment Fund FFQ staff—LaToshia D. , Karen Bustard, and Jacob Kurtz led by Sara Vernon Sterman—as well as all program consultants. Based in Florida’s Tampa Bay area, Metropolitan Ministries is a nonprofit organization with a mission to care for people experiencing homelessness and those who are at risk of becoming homeless. Serving their community since 1972, Metro Ministries celebrated its most recent achievement at MiraclePlace Pasco—a campus redevelopment and expansion project in Holiday, Florida. This project, supported by Reinvestment Fund, reached a significant milestone in June 2024 with the completion of a brand-new 10,000-square-foot Family Support Center. We want to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who joined us for the magical Children's Playhouse Fairhill Ribbon Cutting Ceremony yesterday. The event was truly inspiring, and we were honored to have such esteemed speakers share their insights. Karen Bustard from the Reinvestment Fund for Quality highlighted the significance of our center as their fourth Fund for Quality School, emphasizing the critical need for high-quality early childhood education in our community. State Representative Danilo Burgos warmly welcomed us to "el Barrio," and Shante’ A. Brown , Deputy Secretary of OCDEL, passionately spoke about the importance of expanding high-quality childcare services in Philadelphia and recognized the dedication of our early childhood educators. Dionne Chamber-Wright, Co-CEO of Learn Empower Grow Consulting Group and Latinos Educando Juntos Board Strategist, delivered a powerful message about the importance of representation in Black and Brown communities. Her emphasis on hiring and developing staff from within our community resonated deeply with all in attendance. It's the LatinLift Way! 🏘️ Excerpt from a recent article siting our housing research in The Philadelphia Inquirer: More than half of single-family home buyers there from 2020 to 2022 were corporate entities, buying more than 700 properties, according to Reinvestment Fund data. That’s compared with about a quarter of purchases citywide. That rise in investor purchases is squeezing out some would-be homebuyers. It has also degraded the rental housing stock, said Emily Dowdall, President of Policy Solutions at the Reinvestment Fund, a nonprofit lender in Philadelphia. In her analysis of investor purchases, the “vast majority” showed no subsequent permits or rental licenses — meaning that the owners aren’t rehabbing the buildings, or legally renting them. “We think in some cases investors realized they can actually raise rents without providing higher-quality housing,” she said. What an incredible night! On Wednesday, we celebrated 10 years of #FundForQuality! This program was one of the first projects I ever learned about (and got to work on) at Reinvestment Fund. For the last decade it has created over 3,000 high-quality seats across the city of Philadelphia. Last night was a celebration of that history and a reminder of the work we still have to do, so that all children in Philadelphia can receive high-quality childcare. This night wouldn't have happened without a lot of people! I am so thankful that I get to work everyday with LaToshia D. and Karen Bustard. They are truly the greatest teammates I could have asked for. A huge shoutout to Victoria Wilcox (@torianstudios) for photographing this special event and Eloy Cano and the students at the Workshop School for creating some great merch.
