The latest college graduates have garnered a less-than-savory reputation for how they’ve entered the workforce. But some of that may be rooted in misperceptions around how members of Generation Z want to be managed. With labels such as acting entitled and having a poor work ethic in the workplace, recent college graduates have been deemed headaches, with some hiring managers admitting to avoiding them altogether. But a recent survey of 600 recent college grads from Intelligent.com found what young employees need is direction based on their individual needs as opposed to a one-size-fits-all approach. The report found 1 in 5 recent college graduates said they want to be micromanaged, with a manager who is hands-on and involved in their day-to-day work life. Employee concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on their career prospects have ramped up as generative AI tools like ChatGPT have taken center stage. They have good reason to be concerned, according to a new survey of 984 business leaders by ResumeTemplates, which found 3 in 10 companies said they have replaced workers with AI this year. Hybrid work comes with more positives than negatives. That's according to a new report by nonprofit The Conference Board, which drew from surveys of human-resources leaders and interviews with 15 large companies. About 87% of HR leaders surveyed said hybrid work has had a positive effect on work-life balance, and 79% said it boosted retention. In law school, I learned that risk is ever-present and unavoidable. This realization led me to agonize over any choice involving an “unknown.” I vividly recall planning a vacation that included renting a stationary houseboat. I worried incessantly about potential scenarios: “What if we were hit by another boat? Who would cover the damages?” “Does the rental company offer insurance?” “Would my homeowner’s insurance kick in if neither the rental company nor the other boater had insurance?” This relentless risk analysis delayed my decision until the houseboat was unavailable, forcing my family to plan a different vacation. This experience highlighted my struggle with “analysis paralysis,” where the endless “what if” loops felt like navigating a Choose Your Own Adventure book with every decision leading to a different outcome. Being an over-analytical decision-maker is particularly challenging in the legal profession, where thoroughness and caution are essential. However, for in-house lawyers, excessive analysis can lead to indecision or overly cautious actions, slowing decision-making processes and frustrating colleagues. A number of companies are posting job openings with no intention of filling the touted positions but with a host of other goals in mind instead. According to a survey of 753 recruiters by career and resume service MyPerfectResume, 81% of respondents said they are posting for so-called "ghost jobs," which the survey described as positions that are non-existent or have already been filled. The recruiters aren't shy about it either, as 36% said about a quarter of their job postings are ghost jobs, and 22% said the same for about half their job postings. Bass, Berry & Sims’ decision to delay hiring of first-year associates may not be an indication of the market, according to Southeast recruiters and other industry observers, who say they haven’t seen any slowdown in new associate hires across the market. The Nashville-founded firm, which boasts the largest practice devoted to the city’s signature health care industry, decided to start its incoming associate class in January rather than the traditional September start date and will offer stipends to affected attorneys, a firm official confirmed on Wednesday. Atlanta-based recruiter Raj Nichani of the RMN Agency said he did not “see others following suit with this.” “I’ve talked to several firms who have their classes coming up, and they’re excited about their classes and not going to defer it until January,” he said.
