SAGE cultivates powerful new ways to build a healthy, just, and inclusive global economy. Our “laboratory” approach equips advocates across fields with the financial and technical resources along with hands-on support that creates breakthrough strategies that hold economic actors accountable. Since 2015, the Fund has supported 45 projects with $6 million in over 40 countries, creating a pipeline for emerging work on human rights and the global economy. SAGE concentrates collective work on a theme that is poised for innovation and builds a critical mass of strategy development and learning around that theme, sharing it with civil society organizations, movements and donors for greater impact.

Recently, The SAGE Fund Fund in collaboration with Ford Foundation and USAID, co-hosted a learning briefing on Care to share the results of our 2024 Request for Proposals on Care and to lead a discussion among funders and civil society partners on the gaps and opportunities in the Care field and how to build a more coordinated funder landscape. Attendees to the session heard presentations from SAGE, Iris Group (on behalf of USAID), and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Research Center (IDRC) on three independent mappings done by these organizations about the state of the Care field for funders and civil society, and on how to scale promising work for greater impact. Alongside remarks from Ghada Abdel Tawab (Ford) and Bama Athreya (USAID), SAGE’s Director, Daria Caliguire, shared an overview of the response to our RFP, including the range of movements and organizations working on Care, Care Work and Care Economy. She lifted up regional trends and the areas of focus, strategies and approaches where there is growing momentum and opportunities to support more work. Insights and reflections from the event along with the findings and analysis from our 3-year mapping, grantmaking and learning initiative on Care, will culminate in a report published by SAGE in early 2025. New ground-breaking report reveals toxic pollution from industrial cobalt mines is jeopardising the health of hundreds of thousands of people. In partnership with DRC-based investigators AFREWATCH, our study, “Beneath the Green: A Critical Look at the Cost of Industrial Cobalt Mining in the DRC”, highlights the grave consequences of toxic pollution linked to industrial cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Communities we visited by said that water contamination is harming their health and having destructive consequences on local ecosystems and agriculture. Women were repeatedly cited as facing increased gynaecological and reproductive issues. Cobalt is a key component in electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The new report underscores the need for the clean energy and automotive sectors to adopt responsible sourcing practices that address these impacts and uphold human rights.
