AS OF THIS DAY, a new blogpost from Foundation Exec. Director, Faith Sandler. Link to Words of Faith blog below! "Would you look at this?! I’m waking up today speechless at what a community of determined young people, proud families, generous contributors, devoted educators, and fearless advocates can do. Though I’ve had 35 years of mornings like this, I’m glad you’ve joined me on this one. Today, 537 well-qualified students HAVE what they need to head into a new school year. Note, by glancing at the table below: They come from households providing, on average, $1,275 per year toward their education. It’s costing an average of $33,608 per year for these students to attend schools which are public, private, in-state, out-of-state, HBCU and PWI, small and large. Our community is sending them with $6,331,435 in real money and inestimable quantities of love, guidance, and encouragement. There’s nothing extraordinary about this day in St Louis. It’s horrible-hot and there’s much to be done, as always. Yet, I am completely amazed." – Faith Sandler, Executive Director, The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis https://lnkd.in/gjfk2T_Q

Supporting students takes many forms at The Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation provides scholarship grants and interest-free loans to more than five hundred students annually. But did you know the Foundation also provides guidance to many more who are navigating the complexities of college access and success, both in the St. Louis area and across the US? This guidance is truly at the heart of the Foundation’s mission. Students need all the news, both encouraging and concerning, in order to make informed decisions. #scholarship #education #university https://lnkd.in/gjj47XCx

Executive Director Faith Sandler on getting rid of the FAFSA altogether: “There’s just a whole host of federal-relief programs that have already determined a family to need assistance,” paying for college, Sandler said. But the college financial aid system “has evolved to what is really just an almost obscene, at this point, set of tests and trials to prove repeatedly that you don’t have money.” Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gMqwykgj

"Some students may be feeling pressure from schools to commit, said Teresa Steinkamp, the director of advising at The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis, an organization that provides scholarships and guidance to low-income students. In some cases, they may be asking for a deposit in order to secure housing or choose a roommate, she said. 'They're being asked via text message from university mascot-automated chatbots how likely they are to attend the school,' she said. 'Even if it's not a formal commitment, schools are trying to gauge how likely students are going to come.' Steinkamp says students should remember that the pressure they're feeling from colleges isn't really about them. 'For schools it's about making sure that they've got students coming in in their next class,' she said." Bottom line for students: Fill out the FAFSA, WAIT TO COMMIT until you have formal financial aid offers in place and, when in doubt, REACH OUT to an advisor at The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis. https://lnkd.in/gkHBDnD6

"Today, we have seven million 'last dollars' to award before students report to campus in August. More than three-quarters of those dollars are available in the form of scholarship grants. The barriers and time constraints are too exhausting to name and some perhaps yet unknown as the FAFSA is not yet 'fixed'. But watch us get it done anyway."
