While the school year has ended, we’re excited to reflect on some of the amazing accomplishments SOGM students achieved as well as the incredible opportunities they’ve participated in! - Museum Visit to the Alice Freeman Memorial Institute - Scholars learned about the history of one of the first Black boarding schools here in North Carolina! SOGM students volunteered at the Briggs Ave. Community Garden, attended youth church together, and participated in a cooking class. - Business and Finance Workshop - From practicing public speaking skills to researching businesses, students acquired knowledge applicable to solving real-world problems. Led by one of our instructors, Leston Cochran! - Shark Week - This year, our #GlobalLeaders also had the chance to dissect sharks! Led by Alexis, one of our Student Success Interns! - Resume Workshop - SOGM high school scholars had the opportunity to make their own resumes and learn valuable tips about standing out to future employers! With summer in full swing, we're excited to shine a spotlight on one of our students who’s making waves both inside and outside of the classroom! Congratulations to Chris on receiving the 2024 Alamo Junior Academic for Science Award for Chemistry! Chris is one of our rising 11th grade students in our #RadicalThinkers program. With a passion for baseball and fishing, his dream career is to be a Game Warden or Rancher. Some of the things that Chris worked on this past school year was improving the quality of his writing for his World History AP course, advocating for himself, developing his executive function skills, and strengthening his math skills. Chris' hard work, coupled with our intentional coaching, led him to earn the A/B honor roll in his first quarter of coaching! This was not easy--it required working hard daily, SOGM coaching sessions during the week and on the weekends, attending SOGM office hours, and more--and he did it! #SOGM #education #virtualcoach #schoolvisit #tutor

In a school visit to Walnut Hill, our founder, Marlisha Janica went above and beyond to help one of our students in our #RadicalThinkers program. By creating organization systems in her dorm, creating class assignment trackers, and grabbing essential dorm items at Target, Marlisha helped the scholar get one step closer to her academic and personal goals all while keeping in mind the best approaches for her mental health as she navigates boarding school. #education #schoolvisit #SOGM #boardingschool #executivefunctioncoaching

At SOGM, not only do our students excel in the classroom, they also excel as leaders! Jiae is one of our Volunteer Tutors and she leads geometry tutoring. Her hometown is Seoul, South Korea, and she attends Duke University currently. Jiae loves the supportive and caring community here at SOGM. Some of her favorite hobbies include traveling, reading novels, and drawing. Emilie is our Advancement and Marketing Intern this spring. She currently attends the University of California, Santa Barbara and hopes to pursue a career in communication. Emilie’s favorite aspect of SOGM is being able to work for a non-profit organization that supports the education and growth of all students. This week, our scholars at The School of Gifted Minds launched our school’s FIRST ever fundraising campaign. We successfully started our school 2 years ago with $0 fundraised. Meet Bailey  — a Student Success Intern supporting students in both our Radical Thinkers and Global Leaders programs. Multiple scholars have improved their academic performance by full letter grades with her direct support – but Bailey’s intentionality, consistency, and high expectations are what our SOGM Village appreciates most about her. Bailey has dedicated her time, hard work, and love to support our students in many ways this year – including 1:1 sessions, small groups, office hours - you name it.
