One year ago we spread our wings and took flight–receiving our first donation and a huge vote of confidence from those who believed in our mission: to expose low-income high school students in the New York City metro area to a world beyond their own. Each trip provided students with life-changing experiences and invaluable perspectives. We’ve also organized local excursions closely linked to curricula and service-learning, enhancing classroom instruction with real-world application. Journey to South Africa: A Teacher’s Perspective... as The Trip Foundation reflects on the past school year and looks forward to exposing more students to a whole new world this time around. Karisa Jones, teacher and trip leader at the East Side Community High School (lower east side of Manhattan) on the trip's impact: “The South Africa trip was a transformative experience for both my students and me, offering a unique opportunity for my students to step outside their comfort zones and immerse themselves in a different culture,” said the trip’s organizer and learning specialist, Karisa Jones. “They engaged directly with local communities, gaining firsthand insights into the complexities of South Africa’s history, including its struggles with apartheid and its ongoing efforts towards reconciliation and growth. This exposure fostered a deep sense of empathy, global awareness, and a commitment to social justice among the students. “Being able to travel abroad away from their families and forge stronger bonds with their peers was an amazing experience. The way the students looked out for each other, learned about each other and themselves as individuals was priceless. The experience also encouraged personal growth, as students developed greater independence, resilience, and a collaborative spirit by navigating new environments and challenges together.” https://lnkd.in/eCJkxnmg
