🌟 We are proud to announce an exciting milestone! 🌟 Miguel Alberto Arrieta Berrocal, a distinguished student at CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), has been appointed as the new Vice Minister of Youth of Costa Rica. On October 10th, President Rodrigo Chaves selected Arrieta to join his administration, recognizing his expertise and leadership to advance the country’s youth agenda. Currently completing his Master’s in Economics, Development and Climate Change at CATIE, Miguel is part of the 2023-2024 graduating class. His appointment is a testament to his dedication to sustainable development and the empowerment of Costa Rica’s youth. Luis Pocasangre, CATIE’s Director-General, expressed the institution’s pride in this achievement: "Miguel Arrieta has shown an unwavering commitment to sustainability and youth development—two key pillars of CATIE’s work. His appointment underscores the impact of our educational mission in shaping future leaders for Costa Rica and beyond." Mariela Leandro, Dean of the CATIE Graduate School, shared her confidence in Miguel’s future role: "We are certain that Miguel will drive forward policies that support youth participation and sustainable development, creating lasting, positive change in society." 🌍 Strengthening Bonds for a Sustainable Future 🌱 This past Friday, October 4th, CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) had the honor of hosting Mr. Jürgen Klenk, Permanent Representative of the German Cooperation for Development (GIZ) in Costa Rica, along with his wife, at its campus in Turrialba, Costa Rica. During their visit, they met with CATIE's General Director, Dr. Luis Pocasangre Enamorado, to discuss collaborative efforts toward sustainable development. The delegation had the opportunity to explore the Biotechnology Laboratory, the Orthodox Seed Germplasm Bankn and the International Coffee and Cocoa Collections, which are celebrating 75 and 80 years respectively this year. They also learned about CATIE's ongoing research in agroforestry systems, silvopastoral systems and sustainable livestock farming. A visit to CATIE's Botanical Garden marked a special moment, as Mr. Klenk planted a tree, symbolizing the strong cooperation between CATIE and GIZ. GIZ has been a pillar of support for more than 50 years, working alongside businesses, civil society actors and research institutions to foster impactful development policies. Currently, CATIE and GIZ are working closely on two key programs for Inclusive Green Development in the region: 🌿 Transform-Innova Program – This initiative aims to shift agricultural and blue economy production systems toward sustainable, biodiversity-rich, low-carbon, and climate-resilient value chains, supporting Costa Rica’s National Decarbonization Plan and its nationally determined contributions (NDCs). 🌎 EbA LAC Program – Focused on increasing the climate resilience of vulnerable communities and ecosystems in rural areas of Ecuador, Guatemala, and Costa Rica, using Ecosystem-based Adaptation measures. 🌍☕ Strengthening Coffee Research Partnerships at CATIE This week, the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) proudly hosted the World Coffee Research (WCR) global team, bringing together 28 members from 17 countries. This important retreat focused on fostering connections, enhancing trustmand improving collaborative efficiency in coffee research. The WCR team also explored the International Coffee Collection, celebrating its 75th anniversary. Located in Turrialba, Costa Rica, this unique collection houses over 2,000 accessions of Coffea arabica, making it the second most diverse in Latin America and the only one recognized as a World Heritage site by FAO outside Africa. To commemorate this milestone, CATIE will host a scientific congress on December 3rd-4th, featuring leading experts in coffee research and production. Among the attendees were key coffee breeders, including Santos Barrera Lemus from Colombia, who shared, “This is my fifth visit, and it’s always enriching. This gathering has allowed us to connect with various teams and CATIE offers a stunning environment.” Robert Kawuki, a robusta coffee breeder from Uganda, emphasized the value of this retreat for professional development: “Identifying our top five strengths has been crucial for improving our efficiency. Touring CATIE’s coffee trials and enjoying the tranquility of the location was an incredible experience.” In addition to productive discussions, participants enjoyed excursions to local hills and the volcano, engaging in meaningful conversations with local guides. This week has been a memorable blend of learning, collaboration, and connection with nature for the WCR team. 🌿 Strengthening Agricultural Resilience in Central America: Producers Visit CATIE as Part of the AGROINNOVA Project 🌿 On September 11th, 2024, 30 producers from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama visited the CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) campus. This visit, organized under the AGROINNOVA Project, focused on agroforestry systems and sustainable technologies aimed at improving climate resilience and food security in the Central American Dry Corridor (CSC). During their visit, participants explored key areas of CATIE, including the Commercial Farm, Goat Module, International Cocoa Collection and Botanical Garden. The main objective was to facilitate knowledge exchangebetween producers and technical experts on sustainable practices, innovative technologies, and agricultural techniques adapted to the region’s realities. Key discussion topics included: 🌾 Sustainable agriculture and profitability 🌳 Agroforestry systems with added value 🐐 Small-scale goat farming 🌍 Climate change adaptation 🌿 Biodiversity conservation and sustainable livestock management This collaboration and knowledge-sharing experience, alongside strategic alliances in agricultural, forestry, and digital technologies, is expected to significantly enhance climate resilience and food security in the CSC region. 🌍 NASA and USAID Partner with CATIE to Launch the SERVIR-Central America Hub 🌍 On September 5th, 2024, CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) welcomed a high-level delegation from NASA and USAID to further develop the SERVIR-Central America Hub. This initiative will leverage NASA’s cutting-edge space-based technologies to help Central American communities enhance their climate resilience and environmental sustainability. The delegation, led by key figures such as Nancy Searby, Capacity Building Program Manager at NASA Earth Action Program and Dan Irwin, Global Program Manager for SERVIR, discussed the Hub’s co-creation process and CATIE’s role as a strategic partner. This collaboration aims to provide critical climate data that will inform decision-making across the region. Ashley Netherton from USAID emphasized the shared goals: "With this new hub, we have the opportunity to utilize NASA’s tools to truly benefit Central American communities, helping them make better decisions in the face of climate change and environmental challenges."
