Outdoor play is key to sparking creativity and imagination, but extreme heat, flooding, and lack of accessible green space too often keep kids indoors. We’re transforming schoolyards across New York City into greener, more resilient spaces through our Community Schoolyards program, including a recent opening at the Corlears School complex in Manhattan with Nike and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Together, we're building spaces that say goodbye to pavement and hello to play, shade, and climate resilience—for today’s communities and the next generation of leaders and dreamers. Check out this The New York Times piece for the important story of Lincoln Beach in New Orleans, as well as two other TPL projects dedicated to celebrating Black life in America. Prince Hall Masonic Lodge, the former office of Martin Luther King Jr. and American Beach, which served as one of the few Florida beaches open to African Americans during segregation, are just two examples of the rich history lands play in telling the full American story. https://lnkd.in/esYpqwSq

It was an honor to host NYC Parks Commissioner Susan Donoghue for a discussion with Linda Hwang and Tamar Renaud on TPL's latest research findings on green gentrification. This groundbreaking research provides guidance for urban planners, policymakers, placemaking funders, and community advocates working to balance the benefits of green space development with the need to protect and support existing communities. Parks and green space are powerful engines for economic development. In our recent Parks Investment and Economic Vitality report, we found that cities that invest in parks and open spaces attract a diverse workforce and, in turn, businesses, employment opportunities, and visionary real estate development that contribute to improved quality-of-life in cities. Ft. Worth, TX is onboard and is taking a major step forward in expanding green space. We are honored to be featured in this Fast Company article for our efforts in advocating for more investment in park equity. https://lnkd.in/dDfsAKAW

Take a deep breath. How do you feel? Today, as we celebrate World Rivers Day, we're reminded of just how essential public lands and rivers are to our health and well-being. These waters inspire us with their beauty, connect us to each other, and help us to go with the "flow." Conservationist Mark Angelo once said, “Rivers are the arteries of our planet; they are lifelines in the truest sense.” That's why we are partnering with people in communities across the country to protect the lands and waters they value. The result? Cleaner air and water; healthier, more equitable communities; and a more resilient and livable environment for people everywhere.
