Celebrating and protecting the distinctive charms of Massachusetts. For everyone.

About us

Founded by landscape architect Charles Eliot in 1891, The Trustees has, for more than 125 years, been a catalyst for important ideas, endeavors, and progress in Massachusetts. As a steward of distinctive and dynamic places of both historic and cultural value, The Trustees is the nation’s first preservation and conservation organization, and its landscapes and landmarks continue to inspire discussion, innovation, and action today as they did in the past. We are a nonprofit supported by members, friends, and donors and our more than 115 sites are destinations for residents, members, and visitors alike, welcoming millions of guests annually. www.thetrustees.org.

  • On today's edition of Trustees Hidden Gems, we introduce you to... Becket Historic Quarry & Forest in Becket. 🌲 🍂 Fall, foliage, a quarry and ruins in the woods? It's the best time of year to take a road trip and go exploring in the Berkshires, who knows what you'll find! 🧐 Perhaps you'll stumble across a hidden treasure 🗝️ or you might just find trucks, winches, railroad tracks, and other pieces of heavy equipment that were abandoned in the late 1940s, as though quarry workers simply walked off the job and never returned. 📍 Visitors to Becket Quarry can experience seven miles of hiking trails 🚶♀️ that span serene natural vistas, craggy ascents, vernal pools, and wildlife, including protected New England cottontail habitat. Becket has an interesting history and a storied past which remains frozen in time. Make your way toward the submerged quarry pit and discover cliffs rising 75 feet above inky waters. ⚠️ Please note: Cliff diving and swimming in the quarry pit is prohibited. Cliff diving can result in physical injury or death. Do not jump from the cliffs. There are many hazards lying beneath the surface—old equipment, downed trees—and there is zero visibility in the water. 🗺️ To get there: From points east: Follow I-90W to Westfield. Take exit 41 to US-20 W, MA-23W and N Blandford Rd to Quarry Rd in Becket. 🅿️ Parking is FREE for Members. $10 parking for nonmembers (at the kiosk). 📷: Photo 1, credit John Roberts 📷: Photo 2, credit Melanie @melaniesnicket 📷: Photo 3-5, credit David Edgecomb @davidedgecomb 📷: Photo 6-7, credit Jean-Pierre Pasche @bigredframe #TheTrustees #Berkshires #BecketMA #BecketQuarry #NewEnglandFoliage #HiddenTreasure #ExploreNature #HikingTrails #Abandoned #NatureLovers #NewEnglandHikes #DiscoverTheBerkshires #OutdoorExploration #HistoricQuarry #NewEnglandFall #Accessibility [Description: A series of photos taken by various photographers who visited Becket Quarry in Becket, MA.]

  • “Across Boundaries, Across Barriers” – Featured Art, Part 3 of 5: Over the next month, in a five-part series, we will be featuring historic and contemporary works of art from several Native American communities featured in the “Across Boundaries, Across Barriers” exhibit at Fruitlands Museum @fruitlandsmuseum in Harvard. Bow guards—known to the Diné as ketohs—are both beautiful and useful. This one in particular uses traditional materials (leather and silver) alongside a unique element, turquoise. It's part of the "Radiant Traditions" (East) section of the new "Across Boundaries, Across Barriers" exhibition at Fruitlands Museum in Harvard. See it alongside many other historic and contemporary Native Art pieces by visiting soon! 📷: Artist once known, Diné (Navajo). Ketoh, c. 1910. Silver, leather, and turquoise.
