About us

The United States Navy Memorial, located on America’s main street at 701 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, between the White House and the Capitol Building, is quickly becoming one of Washington’s premier destination locations with more than 110,000 visitors each year. It boasts a 230-person state-of-the-art theater frequently booked for Hollywood movie screenings and a 3,500 square-foot interactive exhibit space that immerses visitors in the rich heritage and culture of the Sea Services, making it a first-class venue for Navy ceremonies and private events. Outside the Visitors Center is a large plaza with a granite map of the world that serves as the stage for wreath laying ceremonies, Navy Band concerts, and outdoor film festivals, all featuring an unparalleled backdrop of the National Archives. Overlooking Memorial plaza is the original Lone Sailor statue, which has become an iconic, nationally renowned representation of American sailors, surrounded by fountains with water from the seven seas. The Navy Memorial’s mission is to Honor, Recognize and Celebrate the men and women of the Sea Services, past, present and future; and to inform the public about their service.

President & CEO United States Navy Memorial

Shipmates,   One of the best parts of our job at the United States Navy Memorial is a chance to welcome some incredible people, like many of you, to the Granite Sea and the Visitor Center! We had a very exciting guest stop by recently, and I really enjoyed welcoming American Television Host and Narrator, Mike Rowe, to the Navy Memorial. Our Silver Level Corporate Partner, US Money Reserve, brought him in on their trip to DC. We were excited to share our history and mission during a tour led by the incredible Director of our National Chiefs Mess Victor Smith and enjoyed learning about Mike’s connection with the military.   The United States Navy Band was in for quite the surprise when Mike joined them for a few maritime songs during their rehearsal for that evening's Concert on the Avenue and if you thought he was good on Dirty Jobs or the Deadliest Catch, you should hear Mike sing--safe to say that there is never a dull day at the Navy Memorial!   We’re coming up on a busy few weeks at the Memorial. We are hosting our annual Lone Sailor Awards Dinner on September 19th honoring Medal of Honor Recipient Master Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL), Ed Byers, Jr., USN (Ret.), and former Chairman and CEO of Hospital Corporation of America and U.S. Navy Veteran, Jack O. Bovender, Jr. Our POW/MIA Recognition Day wreath laying ceremony is on September 20th and then we will have MCPON Honea join us for a SITREP livestream on October 3rd! Make sure to follow the United States Navy Memorial to learn more and to find links to register to attend our upcoming events. Right across from the National Archives and with our own Metro Stop, we are easy to get to, and I hope to see you all around the Memorial very soon!

Chief Selects were announced last week which means the Delbert D. Black National Chief’s Mess and the Navy Memorial will soon be buzzing with Chiefs from the east coast to learn about the history and heritage of their new rank. Last year, we had 30 messes and 1,032 Chiefs and Selectees visit us, and with the addition of our newly renovated exhibits, we're excited to continue to be a part of their tradition. #NavyChiefNavyPride #CPOPride
