A big thank you to Coastal Virginia Magazine and all of the VLM family who voted! The Virginia Living Museum was entered into the 2024 Best of Coastal Virginia Readers’ Choice Awards where more than 249,000 votes were cast in various categories from favorite restaurants to favorite attractions and won 🥇 in the categories of Best Family Friendly Attraction and Best Science & Nature Museum! The Virginia Living Museum continues to be a museum leader in its use of native wildlife to present its message – stimulating knowledge, awareness and appreciation of the living world. Visitors to the Living Museum encounter more habitats, wildlife and plant species than would be encountered in a lifetime of outdoor adventures in Virginia. The exhibits showcase all of the state’s regions from the upland coves of the Appalachian Mountains to the salty offshore waters of the Atlantic Ocean and feature more than 245 different animal species. The Museum’s unique exhibits are also a vital component in its extensive education programming. The Museum believes in hands-on education; that by experiencing science it will become memorable. More than two million students have visited the Museum since 1987. All of the Museum’s classes are correlated to Virginia’s Standards of Learning and targeted to specific grade levels. For Museum members and visitors, there are special programs and weekend safaris to the caves, swamps and fossil banks of Virginia, helping to bring science and nature up close and personal to young and old alike. With more than 500 active volunteers, the Virginia Living Museum is testimony to the appreciation and overwhelming support it receives from the local community. Thank you again to everyone who supports the VLM! #coastalvirginia #newportnews #virginiabeach #williamsburg

Sometimes we are fortunate enough to meet giants. Dr. Brian Davis, CEO of Georgia Aquarium impacted so many in our conservation and education field. His passion and humanity were incomparable. Deepest condolences to our Georgia Aquarium colleagues.
It is with immense sadness we announce the passing of our leader, friend, and mentor, president and CEO, Dr. Brian Davis. Brian was an exceptionally talented and intelligent individual who left a tremendous imprint on the education and zoological fields. Furthermore, he was a beautifully compassionate human being who lifted others up and dedicated himself to creating a caring and diverse space at the Aquarium. He was a dynamic thinker and always pushed the boundaries of what we could achieve, making Georgia Aquarium an extraordinary place. He was one of the first employees at the Aquarium prior to opening in 2005 and led us through years of innovation and growth. Brian’s indelible imprint made all those he knew better – we are better because of Brian. As we navigate this heartbreaking news, our priority lies with caring for staff. We may have limited operations over the coming days to allow our staff time to grieve. “We are heartbroken by this news. Brian was a giant in leadership with his intellect, wisdom, and imagination,” said Steve Koonin, Chairman of the board of Georgia Aquarium. Our thoughts are with Brian’s family and all those that he touched throughout his life.

Thanks to the support of Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation’s grant, the Museum’s environmental educators lead youth and adult volunteers in many Community Conservation field projects. This past Sunday, Dominion Energy staff members, Crystal B. Bright and Carolyn Champion and special guests, joined the VLM’s Ectotherms Team and summer campers on campus for one session of our Turtle Census. Staff began this multi-year research project to monitor the population changes of freshwater turtles in our local watershed. This hands-on census results in a real-world impact on the community monitoring the health of native wildlife populations. Dominion Energy, thank you for your support and for counting, measuring and releasing 36 turtles with us! Your enthusiasm inspires future conservationists, your knowledge enriches our understanding of the natural world, and your compassion sets an example for us all. Thank you for being the backbone of our animal family. Your dedication makes the Virginia Living Museum not just a place to see animals, but a home where conservation comes to life and where our community connects with nature.
