We invest in, train, and connect community leaders to advance gender, racial and economic justice.

About us

Women’s Foundation California is a statewide public foundation dedicated to achieving gender, racial, and economic justice by centering the experience and expertise of communities most impacted by systemic injustice. We work to invest in, train, and connect community leaders to advance gender, racial, and economic justice. We do this by providing grants to small community-led organizations, training community leaders through the Women’s Policy Institute, and fostering a community of advocates, donors, policymakers, grantmakers, academics and many others through convenings to share knowledge and strengthen the social justice movement in California. Unlike private foundations, which are endowed with funds from a family’s wealth or corporate earnings, community foundations gather their financial contributions from the public — from individuals, families, and businesses who want to support social change. • The #Olympics are more than just a global spectacle—they're a reflection of our ongoing societal struggles with gender diversity, inclusivity, and justice. While the 2024 Olympics have been celebrated as the first gender-equal games, it's crucial to look beyond the numbers. True gender equality is about dismantling rigid norms that marginalize those who don't fit narrow, Eurocentric standards of womanhood. The case of Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who faced exclusion not for her talent but due to gender policing, highlights the pervasive transphobia and sexism in sports. This incident underscores the intersection of misogyny, racism, and anti-trans sentiments that continue to harm women worldwide. At Women’s Foundation California, we reaffirm our commitment to intersectional feminism and the belief that trans rights are human rights. The fight for gender justice demands that we challenge harmful ideologies, resist misinformation, and amplify the voices of those most marginalized. As we reflect on the achievements and challenges of this year’s games, let’s renew our commitment to creating a world where everyone is treated with dignity, respect, and equality—regardless of gender identity or expression. https://lnkd.in/gux4Yxzt #GenderJustice #IntersectionalFeminism #Olympics2024

  • We continue, alongside our community and grant partners, to imagine a world where there are no barriers to Black healing. We are building a future where Black women are safe, supported, and thriving. BEAM (Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective) — “The murder of #SonyaMassey at the hands of Illinois State Police, and the way our country continues to criminalize and fail Black folks who are neurodivergent and in crisis, is something that deeply impacts the work we do here at BEAM. Liberation is not possible until we completely reimagine these systems that harm us more than they care for us. And healing justice requires that we center the most vulnerable of our communities! During these times, BEAM (Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective) continues to share the message that we support and we protect Black women!” #SayHerName Artwork via @devthepineapple

“Today a Black woman, an Indian American woman, and a Californian from a family of immigrants was endorsed as the nominee for President of the United States by Biden. This is a historic moment in a year and campaign already marked by violence, war, racist rhetoric, and extreme attacks on bodily autonomy. This moment is propelling us forward on the road to justice. This is an opportunity to redefine and expand American democracy. Collectively, we must ensure change is not only possible, but inevitable and irresistible.” - Beatriz (Bia) Vieira, CEO Women's Foundation California https://lnkd.in/gBwMAxj6 #intersectionalfeminism #feministfuture #multiracialdemocracy #kamalaharris
